Mar. 10, 2021: While the boys' indoor track season opened in January, a combination of Covid restrictions and snowy weather only allowed for one meet. The boys' sole event took place on the turf at the Milton Dome in Milton, New York on February 20th, and the boys ran extremely well.
"Our proudest moment was certainly the 4x300m relay," said Coach Brian Halling. The relay team, Connor Randall, Henry Donohue, Conor O'Brien, and Johnny Moynihan won the event with a time of 2:42.2.
"This is technically a school record," said Halling, "as we don't typically run this distance indoors. It's certainly worth noting though given the unique circumstances this year."
When The Armory closed to become a Covid vaccine site, the Broncos lost their home track. Despite this setback, they persisted and were open to transitioning to outdoor meets. Unfortunately, there was more snow this winter than in previous years, and as a result, the team had to hope for enough melting and open space to be able to practice. As it became clear that the track would not be an option for meets, the team's only option would be to compete on the turf in Milton over winter break.
The Broncos were persistent this season and battled through every obstacle they faced. They practiced in the cold on the open portions of road, the cleared sections of sidewalk, and their favorite hilltop loop for 400m intervals.
The winter track team had great potential this year as the team was led by a talented group of seniors. Missing the season was truly a tough pill to swallow.
"We have an absolutely incredible group of seniors that includes defending league winners, defending section champions, and even NYS meet hopefuls," noted Coach Halling. "Knowing that these individuals lost out on their senior year and we, as a team, didn't get to see all that they would have accomplished this year is truly upsetting."
Senior Captains Connor Randall, Johnny Moynihan, George Daher, and George McCormick led the winter track team this season. In 2020, Randal broke the school record in the 200m dash and placed an impressive 5th in the 300m (37.18) at the Westchester County Championships. He also teamed up with current seniors Henry Donohue and Eric Fleisig and graduate P.J. Kresinski to place 4th in the 4x200m relay at the county championships last year.
Other seniors on the team include Tim Atkeson, Holden D'Avico, Spencer Dessart, Will Grant, Liam Heraty, Ben Mandanas, Macklin Pettee, and Billy Rizzo.
"I could not possibly be more proud of this group and how they handled themselves," said Halling. "They relentlessly pushed forward despite everything that was thrown at them."
In other Bronco sports news, the abbreviated regular basketball season came to a close on Monday, and regional playoffs will start this week. The boys' team finished the season 8-3, and the girls' team finished with a 7-3 record. The seeding for the playoffs will take place this week.
Bronxville football began on Monday as part of the newly designated Fall 2 season. The first game will be away against Valhalla on March 20th, and the Broncos will open at home on March 27th against Dobbs Ferry. Both games start at 1:30.
Go Broncos.
