March 12, 2025: The New York State Indoor Track and Field Championships were held this past weekend at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island. The Broncos entered the competition with high expectations and delivered impressive performances, earning gold medals in both the girls’ and boys’ 4x800m relay, along with a silver medal in the girls’ 4x400m relay.

“States is always a special meet because you have the opportunity to compete against the very best of the best,” said Coach Brian Halling. “Probably the highlight of the day was seeing all three of our relay teams run their best times of the year when it mattered most.”

The boys’ 4x800m relay of Davis Patterson, Will Hogue, Julian Gonzalez, and Kieran McBride placed first in Division 2 in a time of 8:02.39.  They finished 7th overall against schools of all sizes.

Patterson, a senior, just started running track his sophomore year and immediately fell in love with the sport. His older brother, Pierce, encouraged him to give track a try.  In 2023, they both ended up on the state-qualifying 4x400m relay and placed 6th overall at the State Championships.

“I wanted to be on a team with my brother before he went to college,” said Davis.  “We always had a competition to see who could run faster.”

Sisters Juliet and Carina Winiecki both traveled to States this year but were competing on different relay teams.  Sophomore Carina along with teammates Emerson Dennis, Finlay Rowan, and Maddy Williams placed first in the 4x800m relay at the Section 1 State Qualifiers in 9:55.61 and were hoping they had a chance to be competitive at States.

“When we were told that we had a shot at winning States, the spark was instantly there,” said Carina.  “It was all we could think about-winning a State Championship Title.”

Senior Maddy Williams was also confident that they could better their time when competing against the best relays in the state.

“We’ve been working really hard all season, keeping in mind our goal of winning states,” said Williams. “We ran 9:55 at state qualifiers but knew we could do much better with competition around us.”

The team did exactly as they set out to do. They won the D2 4x800m in 9:36.03, setting a personal best and improving their state qualifying time by almost 20 seconds.

“We performed amazingly,” said Winiecki. “Our handoffs were smooth, and the excitement coming from inside us and our coaches, teammates, and parents on the sidelines fueled us for sure.”

Juliet Winiecki along with teammates Ella McCalla, Eva Mihova, and Kara Kochansky placed 2nd in the 4x400m in a time of 4:03.42 finishing just 0.01 seconds behind D2 State Champion Mt. Sinai. The two teams ran the race in different heats.

“We were pretty disappointed about losing, but we hope to put down a strong time at New Balance Nationals this weekend in Boston,” said Juliet.

Alex Napolitano was the only Bronco to compete in an individual event.  Napolitano placed 3rd in the weight throw at the State Qualifiers with a personal record of 59’9” and finished 18th at States with a 57’0”.

The Bronco relay teams will complete the indoor season this week as they compete in Boston at the New Balance Nationals.
