Bronxville Police Blotter: June 10 to June 17, 2015

Wednesday, June 10
, 6:48 pm:  On Locust Lane a 16-year-old resident was charged with seven moving violations, including three stop signs and a red light, as well as unlawful possession of marijuana, after he failed to comply with a motor vehicle stop initiated by Sergeant Anderson on Elm Rock Road. While fleeing from the police, the vehicle crashed into the yard of a Sturgis Road residence causing damage to the vehicle and the property. Another 16-year-old Bronxville resident and two juveniles fled from the vehicle on foot after the crash and were apprehended shortly thereafter. All three were released to their parents pending further investigation. The 16-year-old driver was processed and released on his own recognizance to his parents pending his next court appearance.

Thursday, July 11, 8:35 am:  On Kraft Avenue it was reported to police that planters and lights were damaged at the Bow Tie Cinemas and the Soccer & Rugby Imports store overnight. The value of the damage is unknown, and the incident is being investigated.

Thursday, June 11, 4:37 pm:  An iPad, an iPod, and a first-aid kit were reported stolen from a vehicle while parked on Stone Place. There was no damage to the vehicle and there were no signs of forced entry.

Sunday, June 14, 3:08 pm:  It was reported to the police that an unknown person superglued a note to a Jeep Wrangler stating, "This is not a parking spot," while the vehicle was parked behind a Tanglewylde residence. The glue caused permanent damage to the vehicle. The incident is under investigation. 

Wednesday, June 17, 9:25 am:  A 21-year-old resident of Mount Vernon was arrested on Paxton Avenue by Police Officer David DiBenedetto after a motor vehicle stop for failure to use a turn signal revealed that his driver license was suspended for failure to answer a summons from the City of Mount Vernon. He was subsequently charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the 3rd degree. He was released on his own recognizance pending his next court appearance.

Bronxville Overview

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.

While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.

Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.

The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
