Bronxville School Chess Club Wins Three First-Place Team Trophies

Nov. 27, 2013: On Sunday, November 17, the Bronxville Chess Club came out in force at the National Scholastic Chess Foundation's tournament at Greenwich Country Day School.
The Bronxville Chess Club, which includes both elementary school and middle school players in grade 1 through grade 8, had 41 chess players come out for the team's first sponsored tournament of the year. At Sunday's tournament, Bronxville's team had a balance of new and seasoned players: 13 players were first- timers, 10 players were veterans who went to the Chess SuperNationals in Nashville last April, and the others had varying amounts of tournament experience.
The Bronxville Chess Club won three first-place team trophies in the championship, reserve, and booster sections and one second-place team trophy in the primary novice section.
In the reserve section, composed of players rated from 450 to 999, Bronxville had 7 players in the section of 33, and 5 players finished in the top 6: Spencer Thomas earned first place, and fellow team member Charlie Vail earned second. In the highest-rated section, future masters, with players rated 1300 or higher, Jack Kochansky earned second place in the field of ten.
At Greenwich, with a field of over 240 children playing in seven levels, it was exciting to have so many players participating on the Bronxville team. The team is hoping to see continued enthusiasm throughout the chess season.
Players competed in seven sections that are based on their rating and grade in school. The K-1 is for kindergarten and first graders of all levels. Second and third graders compete in the primary or primary novice sections, depending on their prior tournament experience. Grades 4 and up compete in the booster, reserve, championship, and future masters sections based on individual ratings. Higher ratings are earned through successful tournament results. It was a good chess day!
Congratulations to all chess team members--and good luck for the upcoming season.
