Bronxville Boys’ and Girls’ Indoor Track and Field Teams Win 2022 Class C Sectional Championship

Feb. 9, 2022: The Bronxville indoor track and field teams won their respective League Championships in January and showed off their talent again at The Armory on Saturday. Competing against 16 Class C Schools from across Section 1, the boys’ team won the Sectional Championship and had particularly strong performances in the relays and field events scoring in 14 of the 16 events. The girls’ team also won the Class C Sectional Championship taking first place in ten different events.
Both teams dominated the competition. The girls outscored their opponents by over 90 points with Bronxville scoring 144 and Irvington and Hastings tied for second with 51 points each. The Bronxville boys scored 96 points with second-place Briarcliff scoring 63 and third-place Irvington 62.
"It's been a really great experience to work with the team this year,” said boys’ team captain Ian Gegenwarth. “The effort put in by our individuals has been incredible. The effort and energy were manifested in PRs around the board, and the wins at Section Champs. I am looking forward to taking this strong group into the spring and next year's season, and to helping build a team with a reputation of winning."

The boys’ team scored points with strong finishes in field events. Chris Lockwood had two first-place finishes with a 38-5.25 distance in the shot put and a 39-11.25 in the weight throw. Luke Stephens placed 2nd in the high jump (5-8) and third in the triple jump (36-11.25). Max Dicker placed 3rd in the pole vault (10-0), and Jamie Valdez came in 5th in the long jump.
In the 55m dash, Valdez scored for the Broncos finishing in fifth place with a time of 7:05. In the middle-distance races, Ellis Goodson placed 4th in the 600m (1:30.76) and 3rd in the 1000m (2:39.43). In the 3200m, Kieran McBride placed 4th in 10:40.57.
The 4x200m boys’ relay team, Aidan McBride, Dash Kwan, Eamonn O’Reilly, and Pierce Patterson, won the race in 1:40.30, and the 4x400m relay, J.W. Henningson, Will Redman, Andrew Jensen, and Goodson, placed 2nd in 3:45.75.
"We are so proud of the team, and how much they have been able to accomplish this season, especially considering we had so many people joining the team for the first time,” said Henningson, a co-captain of the boys’ team. “It was an amazing experience, and I am so excited to run it back next year!"

The Bronxville girls’ team is historically deep in talent in the running events, and this competition was no exception. Danielle Dragoni and Caroline Ircha placed one and two in the 55m in 7.68 and 7.85, respectively. In the 300m, Milly Koenig placed first (43.34) and Ircha followed in second place (43.80).
The Bronxville girls exceled in the middle-distance races. Hope Hershberg placed 2nd in the 600m in a time of 1:42.38, and Maddy Stupart won the 1000m in 3:07.76. Ava Black ran a time of 5:02.24 to win the 1500m and moves to No. 17 on the notable list of Bronxville 1500m runners.
In the long distance 3000m race, Maddy Williams took the top spot in 10:35.27.
The Bronxville relays swept in the championship. The 4x200m relay, Koenig, Ircha, Juliet Winiecki and Donna Napolitano finished in 1:51.21, and the 4x400m relay, Stupart, Black, Hershberg and Amy Villanueva, had a time of 4:23.31. The 4x800m relay, Williams, Katie O’Hare, Rory Denning and Isabella Fenner, won the race in 10:13.90.
In field events, Koenig won the long jump in 16-5, and Remi Mellinghoff won the triple jump in 30-1.25.

The Section 1 State Qualifier meet will take place on February 20th at The Armory, and the New York State Championship meet follows on March 5th at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Facility on Staten Island.

The boys’ basketball team improved its record to 13-3 with a 60-46 win over Hastings and an 86-83 win over Valhalla in overtime. In the game against Hastings, Chris Kelty had 20 points and Sean McGrath and Greydon O’Keefe scored 12 each.
In the game against the Vikings, Chris Kelty scored 45 points, breaking the previous Bronxville School record (44 points) that was set in 1982. Also scoring in the Valhalla game were Teddy Dolan with 18 points and Sean McGrath with 11.
The boys’ team is ranked No. 1 in Class B by KDJBlog.com.

The Bronxville girls’ basketball team is 11-6 with a 51-38 win over Westlake, a 39-17 win over Edgemont, and a 47-26 loss to Hastings in the past week. The girls are seeded 4th in a field of 16 Class B teams by KDJblog.com.
The seeding for the basketball playoffs will take place next Tuesday, and first round games start on February 22nd.
