Written by S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer

May 28, 2014: The Bronco teams clinched four sectional titles last week in boys' and girls' lacrosse and boys' and girls' track and field. Both lacrosse teams enter regional competition this week, hoping to make it to the state championships at the beginning of June. Individual track and field athletes will compete in the state qualifiers later this week. Two golfers, Connor Daly and Matt Bettino, have already qualified for states and are headed to Cornell University at the end of this week.
Boys' Lacrosse
The boys' lacrosse team sailed through the quarter- and semifinal sectional games last week, easily defeating Nanuet and Briarcliff. In the sectional finals held last Thursday, the Broncos came up against stiffer competition when they faced the Pleasantville Panthers but in the end were able to secure a 9-7 victory in the Class C Championship. In the game at White Plains High School against Pleasantville, the Broncos were down 3-2 at halftime. Pleasantville scored first in the third quarter, but Bronxville answered with four straight goals to take a 6-4 lead. With two minutes left in the game, Pleasantville came within one goal (7-6), but the Broncos held on for the win. Scoring for the Broncos were Matt Behrens and Will Duncan (3 goals each), Ted Forst (2 goals, 1 assist), Henry Grass (1/2), and Michael Crawford (0/1). The Broncos will play in the regional semifinals today against Section 2's Rondout Valley at Lakeland High School at 5:00 pm. The regional finals will be held at University at Albany-SUNY on Saturday, May 31, at 6:00 pm.
Girls' Lacrosse
Last Saturday, the girls' lacrosse team captured the Class C Section 1 title for the first time in the program's history with a 16-10 win over Pearl River. Scoring for the Broncos were Gretchen Richter (5 goals, 1 assist), Grace O'Toole (4/1), Mason Warble (3/1), Ellie Walsh (2/0), Lilly Grass (1/2), and Helen Wood (1/0). Last week the girls defeated Albertus Magnus and a tough Edgemont team to advance to the sectional final. The Broncos will play in the regional finals against the Section 2 winner (Albany Academy for Girls or Red Hook) at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 31, at Torne Valley Field, Hillburn, New York.
Outdoor Track and Field
The Bronxville girls' outdoor track and field team clinched its 16th straight sectional title last Wednesday, taking first place in 13 of the 18 events and outdoing second-place Valhalla by a score of 258-94. Twelve Class C teams competed at the event, which was held at Valhalla High School. First-place finishers included Sophie Kohlhoff (200m), Lise Hudson (400m), Courtney Campbell (800m), Delia Hayes (1500m), Kaitlin Ryan (3000m), Ana Timoney (100m hurdles), Caroline Kirby (high jump), Vivian Mroz (pole vault), Claire Sargent (shot put and discus), and the three relay teams (4x100, 4x400, 4x800).
The boys' track and field team also won the Class C Section 1 Championship with a top score of 146. Valhalla came in second with a score of 78. The boys have won the sectional title six out of the last seven years, losing in 2013 to Pawling. Finishing first for the Broncos were John Flannery (800m, 1600m), Sean Ryan (3200m), J.P. Donohue (400m hurdles), Ian Holland (pentathlon), and the 4x100m relay.
State qualifiers will take place at Arlington High School on Thursday and White Plains High School on Friday.
Golf
Bronxville golfers had a very successful Section 1 tournament. Connor Daly and Matt Bettino both qualified for the Section I New York State team. Daly shot a 75 at Fenway Country Club last Thursday and finished in sixth place; Bettino shot a 79 and finished in ninth place. Martin Jensen and Chris Gay also played well enough to be the alternates for the state team. Jensen's final round of 83 put him in tenth place in Section I, and Gay's round of 79 put in him eleventh place overall.
Daly and Bettino go to Cornell next weekend, where they will play two rounds of golf as part of the Section I team.
Tuckahoe/Bronxville Softball
The newly formed Tuckahoe/Bronxville softball team received the number-one seed in Class B. The team played in the second round of sectionals yesterday, defeating Yonkers Montessori School 8-7. Two Bronxville High School students, Briana Nardone and Ally Schultz, play for the combined team. Nardone, a junior, plays catcher for the team and has a .629 batting average and a 1.08 slugging percentage. The Tigers will play the winner of Briarcliff/Valhalla in the sectional semifinals on Thursday.
