Pets of the Week: Mario and Larry

Jun. 18, 2014:  Hello, my name is Mario. I am writing to you today on behalf of myself and my buddy Larry. I'm the rather handsome guy in the picture--the one with the green collar and white coat. Larry is the other guy. If you have a moment, I would love to tell you our story.

Larry and I were part of a group of dogs that were rescued by the ASPCA in Manhattan from a terrible hoarding situation. Thankfully, the New Rochelle Humane Society had some room for us, and we were transferred there with the hope of finding a wonderful new owner who would love us and take good care of me and my pal.

When Larry and I first arrived at the shelter, we were pretty much a hot, stinky mess. We were filthy, our coats were all matted, our nails were really long, and we both had serious eye problems. As you can imagine, we were quite embarrassed to look the way we did. Honestly, it wasn't our fault, and please trust me when I tell you that if we could have given ourselves baths without the help of a human, we would have done so in a tail shake. No one likes a smelly dog, not even another smelly dog.

Thankfully, as soon as we arrived, the shelter immediately sent us off to the groomer for complete makeovers. I must admit that when we got back, we spent the rest of that day admiring ourselves in the mirror and sniffing each other everywhere. Sorry, that is probably a bit more information than you needed to know, but, hey, we are still dogs after all.

Next, it was off to the vet to make sure we were feeling okay. We both had a feeling that something wasn't quite right after so many years of neglect, and we were not surprised when the vet decided that we each needed to have one eye removed. The good news is that we can see everything we need to with our one good eye; we also look pretty cool since it always looks like we are winking.

Larry and I have been together for as long as I can remember, and after everything we have been through, we really want to stay together. And get this, because Larry is an old guy (I'm only five but he's about eleven), he qualifies for the shelter "silver whiskers program." That means that all of his medical care is taken care of by the shelter for the rest of his life (free vet care for Larry--woohoo!!).

We are very easy guys to live with. We like all other animals, even cats. We like short walks and long snoozes with our humans. Larry is totally chill with everyone. I'm a little nervous with new people and like to spend a little time getting to know them before adding them to my friends list. But once you make it onto that list, you are there forever and ever. Hey, I am a loyal guy, what can I say.

Our friends at the shelter love hanging with us, and we love hanging with them, especially on their laps. But now that we are fully recovered from our eye surgery, we are ready and excited to meet our new family.

We are not trying to be pushy, but you can meet us today if you really want to. Our shelter home is only ten minutes away from Bronxville and is open every day from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm except Thursdays, when it is open from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Oh, and the address of the New Rochelle Humane Society is 70 Portman Ave, New Rochelle.

If you have any questions that you want to ask about us before you come over, you can call the shelter at 914-632-2925 or write to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

And, most important, please don't forget to tell the shelter that you learned about me and Larry from the pet section in MyhometownBronxville.

We will be here waiting for you, and just know that you will love us once you meet me and Larry. We are two really awesome guys who had some pretty bad luck in the past, but know that we are safe now and that our fortune has finally changed for the better. Thanks for taking the time to hear our tale. Hope to see you soon. Woof!
