Dr. Napoleon Peoples Kicks off Black History Month Celebrations at Concordia College

By Holly Magnani, Web and Media Relations Manager, Concordia College

Jan. 18, 2017: "In his iconic 'I Have a Dream' speech, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. envisioned a great nation that 'will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ". . . that all men are created equal."'

Dr. Peoples's lecture comes at a critical time for our students and our community as our nation's gaze is fixed on issues concerning social justice, human rights, and peace.

- Dr. Mandana Nakhai, Concordia College Vice Provost of Academic Affairs

Dr. Napoleon Peoples will give the spring 2017 Jacobson Global Lecture, which will be titled "A Conversation on the Reform and Revolution of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Work" at Concordia College's Sommer Center for Worship and the Performing Arts on January 25 at 7:00 pm. Dr. Peoples is professor emeritus, division of student affairs, at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr. Peoples will lead a discussion on the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the transformation from civil rights to human rights as it relates to Dr. King's work.

"Legacies, like the civil rights revolution of the 1960s, require ongoing reimagination, constructive critique, and innovative application in order remain vital. This dialogue with Dr. Peoples goes a long way towards that end," stated Concordia College president, Rev. John A. Nunes, PhD

A 45-year veteran of Virginia Commonwealth University, Dr. Peoples has received numerous awards for his contributions in the areas of cross-cultural relations both on campus and in the greater Richmond community.

"Ideas of reform and revolution are certainly on the minds of many people today in this post-election climate.  Reactions around the country range from anger, confusion, fear, and uncertainty," said Concordia College Provost, Dr. Sherry Fraser. "Our upcoming discussion on the teachings of Dr. King is timely and will likely lead to interesting and valuable dialogue with the audience."

The Jacobson Global Lecture Series, started in 1990, honors the late Dr. David C. Jacobson, former provost and professor of philosophy at Concordia College. This program complements the college's ongoing efforts to integrate global perspectives into its curricular and co-curricular programs. Since its inception, this program has featured a number of distinguished speakers from diverse international fields who have enlightened the community on timely global topics.

There are a limited number of tickets remaining for this free program.

Bronxville Public Library

Bronxville Public Library

The Bronxville Public Library traces its origins back to 1875, when it was a small lending library housed in a room attached to the “Bronxville Model School.” The Library was officially chartered in 1906 and moved into the Village Hall Building. The needs of the library grew with the town and, in 1942, a new standalone building was erected, which is where the Library is today. Over the years, the Library was renovated and expanded to meet the needs of the community.

The Library has wonderful resources for adults and children and offers a comfortable and relaxing environment. The Library also houses a fine art collection, consisting principally of Bronxville painters and sculptors.

The Library offers special events, art exhibitions, and programs for adults, young adults and children.  All events are open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.
