Holiday Food Waste Tips & FREE Delivery of Food Scrap Recycling Kits to Your Home!

By the Bronxville Green Committee

Nov. 25, 2025: We’ve all heard the shocking statistics about food waste, especially during the holidays, and what it costs our economy and the environment. Luckily, reducing food waste has never been easier.

Here are three steps you can take to make a big impact:

-Practice better purchasing, storing, and food use habits. See suggestions HERE.

-Drop off your holiday pumpkins and gourds for composting! All residents can leave these at the Food Scrap Recycling bins on Palumbo Place behind Village Hall. They will be taken to a commercial composting facility and turned into a rich soil amendment. Please place whole pumpkins and gourds on the ground beside the bins.

-Join Bronxville’s thriving Food Scrap Recycling Program to make a daily impact!

Did you know that food in the trash creates pollution and greenhouse gas emissions? Joining the Food Scrap Recycling program is a great way for your family to reduce those emissions every day.  More than 300 Bronxville households participate in this program, and since inception in 2021 Bronxville has diverted more than 300,000 pounds of food scraps and converted it into compost.

The process is as easy as 1-2-3! Just COLLECT your food scraps (ALL types of food scraps are accepted), STORE & TRANSFER in a secure transfer bin, and DROP OFF behind Village Hall for commercial composting. Learn more  HERE.

HOLIDAY SPECIAL: Residents of the Village of Bronxville who purchase a Food Scrap Recycling Starter Kit through the Village website between December 1st and December 17th will receive FREE home delivery of their kit as well as a second roll of 24 compostable countertop bags! Order your kit HERE. Deliveries will be made on Fridays: December 5th, 12th and 19th.

Let’s all join together to take the challenge of reducing food waste this holiday season and beyond.

The Bronxville Green Committee

The Bronxville Green Committee is a volunteer organization under Village government.  We work with the Trustees and Village staff on programs that promote clean energy initiatives and sustainable ways of living. Our programs include The Bronxville Giving Garden, a community garden whose produce is donated to local groups; Take Back Day, when we collect items to be recycled; and Pollinator Pathways, which encourages adding native plants to our gardens. We believe everyone can make a difference by adopting simple, sustainable practices in daily life so we can work together to protect what we love -- our families, our homes and our town.
