Sep. 27, 2017:  The Bronxville Bronco football team improved its record to 2-2 with a 27-7 victory over Briarcliff/Hamilton on Saturday. It was an unseasonably hot day for football, but the Broncos showed up to win. They put six points on the board early when senior Ryan Alberghine intercepted a pass, taking it 37 yards for a touchdown. The Broncos had a second pick-six when Damian Meehan ran an interception back 75 yards to score. It was the third week in a row that defense scored for the Broncos.

Before the end of the first half, Alberghine had a second touchdown on a pass from quarterback Clarke Stephens, and Dylan James added a fourth touchdown in the third quarter on a short carry into the end zone. Stephens completed six passes for 69 yards, Meehan rushed for 106, and George Daskalakis added 27.

The Bronco defense was outstanding, holding the Bears scoreless until the fourth quarter. Anton Ribka had three sacks and ten tackles, James also had ten tackles, and Nick O'Brien had one interception and six tackles.

There have been a lot of changes to the football program this year, including a new coaching staff and a bump-up from Class C to Class B because of increased high school enrollment. Patsy Manganelli, who previously coached at Blind Brook, took over as head coach this season.

With 38 players on the roster, this year's team may be the biggest ever. Bronxville had just two football teams, modified and varsity, for many years, but the popularity of football led to the addition of a junior varsity team in 2008. This year's JV team is off to an impressive start with three consecutive wins.

The varsity team has three games left in the regular season, two of them at home. Because of Yom Kippur, the Broncos play at Chambers Field this coming Sunday at 2:00 PM against Irvington. Their final home game will take place at homecoming on October 14 at 6:00 PM against Pleasantville. Irvington is 2-2 so far this season, and Pleasantville sits at the top of Class B with a 4-0 record.

Go Broncos.
