Bronxville's Ties with Ivy League Football

Feb. 12, 2025: With the Super Bowl ending the most recent edition of the NFL season, it might be worth looking back on the Village's connection with the teams that began America's obsession with football, the eight Ivy League schools that founded the sport in the 19th Century.

Recently, Bronxville's ties were highlighted at the January 30 Ivy League Football dinner, a fixture on the winter social circuit since its founding in 2001. This recent event was attended by 1100 guests at the Marriott Marquis, including several Villagers with recent experience in playing football for Ivy colleges, Stephen Shoemaker of Yale, as well as the Conway Twins, Christian and Jackson, of Columbia.

The Ivy Dinner was started as a means of celebrating the success of Ivy Football teams in producing nationally recognized leaders in Business and the Professions. Over the years, figures as prominent as George Schultz of Princeton, Henry Paulsen of Dartmouth, and Tommy Lee Jones of Harvard have been honored. Currently, Bronxville is represented on the board of the dinner's sponsor, the Ivy Football Association, by Richard Dresdale, Brown '78, and Bill Primps, Yale '71.

At this year's dinner, former NFL Coaches of the Year, Kevin Stefanski of Penn, and Dick Jauron of Yale, were honored. Most poignant was a posthumous award made to Dartmouth Head Coach Buddy Teevens, a pioneer in reforms designed to make the game safer.

Present and former Bronxville residents in attendance at the January 30 dinner were Jane and Roger Goodell, Beth and Will Fulton, Karen and Peter Lawrence, and Phia and Bill Primps. Peter played defensive end for Dartmouth, and Bill was a fullback at Yale. A good time was had by all!
