Varsity Soccer Coach Donny Lucas Wins 250th Career Game and Bronco Playoff Update

Oct. 25, 2017:  The Bronxville boys' soccer team moves to the Class B Sectional semifinals after a stunning upset of North Salem on Monday. The No. 6 Broncos battled the No. 3 Tigers on a grass field in North Salem, but despite amazing effort from both teams, the game remained scoreless at the end of regulation time. With the score still 0-0 after double overtime, the outcome was determined on penalty kicks, with Bronxville winning 4-3. The Broncos will play away at No. 2 Briarcliff on Thursday.

"I have to say, I could not be more proud of the effort that we gave tonight," said Coach Donny Lucas after the game. "We left it all on the line."

It was a sweet victory for the Broncos and Coach Lucas, who celebrated his 250th win in the first round of sectionals last Friday. In the game at Chambers Field, Jeb Burnell, Harry Colvin, and Zack Zucker scored to give the Broncos a 5-1 win over Dobbs Ferry. 

After Friday's game, athletic director Karen Peterson announced to the crowd that it was Coach Lucas's 250th win. He was presented with a bouquet of balloons and was joined on the field first by his congratulatory team and coaches and then by his family.

"I have had the pleasure of working with Coach Lucas for 20 years, and I've watched him put his heart and soul into the boys' soccer program," commented Peterson. "We are looking forward to the next 250 victories!!"

Coach Lucas has been the head varsity coach at Bronxville for 19 years. He led the Broncos to the sectional finals eight times and the Class B Section 1 Championship twice. In 2008, the Broncos won the Class B New York State Championship under Coach Lucas's guidance.

While Coach Lucas surely remembers the details of many soccer games, some of his fondest memories are about team dinners and past and present players and their families. He is grateful to have so many in the community who have dedicated themselves to the program and the sport. He is also grateful for his friendship with the girls' soccer coach, Don Cupertino, who has taught him a great deal along the way.

The family soccer tradition continues with Coach Lucas's twelve-year-old daughter, who plays midfield, and seven-year-old daughter, who plays keeper.

Girls' Soccer

The No. 1-seeded Broncos entered the first round of Class B playoffs on Saturday, defeating Blind Brook 5-1. Rachael Peacock scored twice for the Broncos and had two assists. Catherine Faville, Lexi Raviol, and Ashley Toal also scored for Bronxville. The sectional quarterfinals, which were scheduled for yesterday, were postponed until today because of the weather. The Bronxville girls will face Pleasantville at home today at 3:00 pm.

The Class C Broncos (12-3-1) finished the regular season last week with shutout games against Pelham (4-0) and Pleasantville (5-0). Kat Ungvary, Hadley Barr, and Hannah Weirens scored in the home game against Pelham, and six Broncos contributed to the scoring in the game against Pleasantville: Caroline Brashear, Weirens, Fiona Jones, Claire Kraemer, and Ungvary.

The team hosted a bake sale last week during its final home game against Pelham, and all proceeds from the sale went to support the One Love Foundation.

Sectional playoffs begin this coming weekend. The Broncos are seeded No. 2 and will play at home in the sectional quarterfinals against No. 7 Rye Neck on Saturday, October 28.

Football

On Saturday, the No. 8 Broncos lost to No. 1 Westlake 52-13 in the Class B sectional quarterfinals. The Broncos scored in the first quarter when Damian Meehan ran a punt back 91 yards and scored again in the fourth quarter on a 31-yard pass from quarterback Clarke Stephens to Meehan. But the Westlake offense was hard to contain, and the Wildcats took a 34-7 lead by halftime. The Broncos will play in a consolation game against Blind Brook on Saturday.

Swimming 

At the Section 1, League 1 Championships held at Felix Fiesta Middle School in Clarkstown last Saturday, two Bronxville-Tuckahoe swimmers hit the New York State qualifying time for the New York State Championships. Alisa Fominykh qualified in the 50 and 100 free, and Emily Gjertsen qualified in the 200 and 500 free. Both will compete at sectionals this week.

Also qualifying for sectionals were Caroline McGrath in the 200 and 500 free and Eileen Marshall in the 100 breaststroke. Three relay teams have also qualified for sectionals: Charlotte Yerkes, Eileen Marshall, Corbin Callaway, and Ava Schelick in the 200 medley relay, Yerkes, Gjertsen, McGrath, and Fominykh in the 200 free relay, and Julia Bazinet, Fominykh, McGrath, and Gjertsen in the 400 free relay.

Cross Country

At the Section 1 Coaches Invitational at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls held on Saturday, Matt Rizzo placed second in the Varsity 3 race with a time of 16:58.60. On the girls' side, Natalie Weiner placed ninth in a time of 21:15.90.

Tennis

No. 1 Broncos defeated Suffern 7-0 on Monday in the quarterfinals of the Section 1 Team Championship. The team will face Rye in the semifinals at the Bronxville Field Club on Wednesday afternoon.
