Chantilly Patisserie and Bakeshop

Sep. 23, 2020: Inspired by the Parisian patisseries they enjoyed on a European trip with their mother, Maria and Mariana Delgado-Gambini opened Chantilly Patisserie in 2010. Today's baguettes are made with their now 10-year old bread starter.

When Maria and Mariana were 9 and 11, the Delgado-Gambini family came to the US from Argentina. Very in touch with their Italian and Spanish roots, the sisters have a natural affinity for style and hospitality.

After graduating from Johnson & Wales University with a focus on Culinary Arts, Mariana honed her pastry skills at the Westchester Country Club. Maria, a graduate of Maryland Institute College of Art, takes the lead on the design elements that brand the shop. Maria worked in the membership area of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she learned how to attract people to an organization and place.

Authentic French pastry demands time. Croissants take four days: prepare dough-rest; laminate with butter-rest; shape into croissant-rest; and finally, bake. Workdays start at 3 am. Today, sleep is an even more precious commodity than previously as Mariana has 6-month-old baby Fiona, and Mariana's daughter, Emilia, is 3. You might remember their mother, Mirta, who often helped out at the store. We don't see much of her nowadays as she watches over the grandchildren.

Up from the kitchen for a quick photo, you see an unbreakable sisterly bond, a bond that survived Mariana teaching Maria how to bake.

Without the rush-to-the-train morning foot traffic and the cancellation of celebrations, Chantilly's business has suffered during the pandemic. For now, the shop is open Thursday through Saturday, 7 am to noon, with many calorie-worthy items available. Orders can also be placed online at www.chantillybronxville.com. Consider a pre-order for a BXV/Chantilly tradition, Halloween Cruffin Day, or maybe a celebration cake just for the family.

Chantilly Patisserie is located at 135 Parkway Road in Bronxville.

Enrico Gargano Hair

Tucked away on the west side of the Bronxville Train Station is Enrico Gargano Hair, a charming two-chair boutique salon with a hip New York City vibe and a seriously cool wall mural.

Enrico grew up in the DC area. Seeking new opportunities and a safer lifestyle, his father, a military policeman, and mother, a dressmaker, emigrated from Rome, Italy, when he was two years old.

Starting in security at the Italian Embassy, his father rose to the administrative offices of the Ambassador. Enrico found his passion at the age of five when he cut the hair of his sister's Hawaiian doll. It didn't go well. He was off to beauty school at age 17.

For 27 years, Enrico worked in the beauty business, including 6 1/2 years at Toni & Guy as a stylist and educator both in CA and NYC. In NYC, he leased chairs at various salons where he developed a loyal clientele.

After living in DUMBO Brooklyn for ten years and seeking more space and outdoor air, Enrico and life partner, make-up artist Ida Rossman, embarked on a search for the perfect neighborhood. They settled in Bronxville in February 2017.

While commuting to NYC, Enrico spotted a "For Lease" sign at 2 Station Plaza. He immediately knew this was the perfect spot for his salon. The location is easy to access for clients from NYC, NJ, and CT.

Enrico opened his appointment-only salon, Enrico Gargano Hair, on June 13, 2020. The salon offers complimentary consultations and 20% off your first haircut. At the super-clean salon, Enrico has focused on COVID safety, including enhanced air filtration and disinfecting procedures.

In his not-so-free time, Enrico golfs, works out, and with a friend is restoring a classic 1983 Volkswagen VW GTI, the first sports hatchback direct from Germany.

Speak with Enrico at (917) 664 2735 or book at enricogarganohair@genbook.com

Enrico Gargano Hair is located at 2 Station Plaza in Bronxville.

Hickey’s Deli

Kathleen Hickey, owner of Hickey’s Deli,  hails from County Cork, Ireland, and has lived in the US for 25 years. With a strong connection to her Irish heritage and family, Kathleen visits Ireland annually only missing this past year due to COVID. Happily for Kathleen, she has a brother, a sister, niece and nephew who live here in the US.

In 2005, when she returned from a year spent in County Cork with her ailing mother, Kathleen purchased the delicatessen from her brother’s friend.

An avid athlete, Kathleen played Gaelic football (yes, women play Gaelic football) until about eight years ago. There are about six or seven female Gaelic Football teams, and they have served as the basis for Kathleen’s lifelong friendships. Games are played on Sunday at Gaelic Park in the Bronx (owned by Manhattan College), practices were two days per week, and then, of course, there were the post-game celebrations.

Proving that a body in motion stays in motion, the retired footballer took up other athletic endeavors. Kathleen is a runner with four NYC Marathons under her belt, and she bikes, hikes, and kayaks in upstate New York. Faithful to her Irish roots, she noted that there’s beautiful hiking in Ireland.

In addition to the usual deli staples, Hickey’s carries Irish fare that includes Shepherd’s pie, beef stew, corn beef and cabbage, scones, Irish candy, soda, and chips.  Kathleen touts Tayto Crisps and claims, “you don’t have to be Irish to love Tayto" or anything else at Hickey’s Deli for that matter.

Hickey's Deli is located at 30 Palmer Ave, Bronxville, NY 10708
