By the family

Dec. 19, 2025: Elizabeth Dorsey Ivey Smith Seed, 87, of Vero Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2025. Fondly known as “Dorsey”, she was a spirited and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and professional whose strong will and boundless warmth left a lasting mark on all who knew her.

Born on October 28, 1938, in New York City to John Ivey and Elizabeth Bruen, Dorsey carried her New Yorker energy and charm throughout her long and accomplished life. Dorsey attended the Spence School for girls in New York, and finished her high school years in Bronxville, New York. She earned a Ph.D. in Nursing from Duke University, a milestone she cherished as both an academic and personal triumph and was a dedicated Duke Blue Devil basketball fan.

Her professional career as a Nursing Administrator at Cornell Medical Center and Mt. Sinai reflected her lifelong dedication to care. She taught maternity care and nursing classes at Hunter College and Columbia University. Dorsey was highly involved in the Episcopal Church in every community she lived in.

Dorsey was preceded in death by husband William T. Seed, stepson William T. Seed Jr., and is survived by son Nelson Smith, daughter Betsy Smith, stepdaughter Stephanie Seed, sisters Stinceon Dennen and Courtney Combe and her beloved grandchildren Cameron Smith, Elle Starratt and Kenley Smith.
