Nov. 20, 2024: This is the time of year when you may have some time on your hands. Should you go Christmas shopping, buy a turkey, or go out to lunch? Or maybe you want to get in a workout. If so, try a fall workout in the garden!
-Start cleaning up plants that are finished for the year.
-Remove and compost annuals (plants that won’t come back next year).
-Cut back perennials (plants that will come back next year) to the ground.
-Do some pruning. Only prune non-flowering shrubs like Hollies, Ilex, and Boxwood. Do not prune spring flowering shrubs like Azalea, Rhododendron, and Hydrangea, or you will cut off the flower blooms for next year. There are exceptions to this rule, so check the internet before you cut.
-Plant Bulbs. It is not too late to plant bulbs that bloom in the spring. It may be difficult to find them in stores, but you can find them online. If going to a store, try heading to the clearance section of Home Depot. Look for Alliums (pictured). I would stay away from tulips because they only give you a good show for one year, and then they peter out the following years. Also, deer, chipmunks, and bunnies love tulips and crocus.
Make sure to plant your bulbs according to their instructions. Dig a 6” deep hole that will accommodate 5 or 6 bulbs, not touching, add a little bone meal, cover, and wait for a surprise in the spring.
...and most of all, enjoy your garden workout!
