by Ellen Edwards, Chair, Bronxville Green Committee
Mar. 11, 2020: Just in time for spring, on April 2 at 7 p.m. at the Yeager Room in the Bronxville Public Library, Nick Guntli of The Horticultural Society of New York will speak on "Green Gardening Practices and Why They Matter."
This event is being co-sponsored by the Bronxville Green Committee, the Boulder Ledge Gardening Club, the Working Gardeners of Bronxville, and the Bronxville Beautification Council.
Nick Guntli is a horticulturalist at The Horticultural Society of New York (HSNY). He is also Director of HSNY's GreenTeam, a workforce training program that teaches job skills through horticulture for formerly incarcerated individuals and at-risk youth.
Nick Guntli
He has a BS from the University of Missouri in Plant Sciences with an emphasis in Landscape Horticulture and an MBA from the Zicklin School of Business with a focus on Sustainable Business. Nick has worked in many different facets of the green industry, including landscaping and public gardens.
Guntli's talk will give residents an opportunity to learn how making changes to their landscaping and gardening practices would have a beneficial impact on the health of their property, its surroundings, and the Bronx River, which runs through Bronxville.
Research projects conducted by students at the Bronxville High School have recently raised community awareness of the impact of local infrastructure and landscaping practices on the health of the river. The co-sponsors of the Green Gardening event hope to attract a strong turnout for this speaker on a timely subject.
The Apr. 2 event is unique in bringing together all three of Bronxville's garden clubs with the Bronxville Green Committee.
A volunteer organization, the Bronxville Green Committee works with Bronxville's local government to promote environmentally sound practices in the village.
The Green Committee runs ongoing community programs such as the Giving Garden and Take Back Day. It also proposes new programs such as food scrap collection for composting and seeks to raise public awareness of the urgent need to conserve resources and adopt environmentally sustainable ways of living.

Upcoming Activities Of Working Gardeners
In the coming months, members of the Working Gardeners, Bronxville's oldest garden club, founded in 1925 by Louise Beebe Wilder, will hear a presentation about "Painting and Gardens" by artist Geoffrey Leckie. They will participate in a member plant swap and tour the house and gardens of Locust Grove in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Upcoming Activities Of Boulder Ledge Gardening Club
The Boulder Ledge Gardening Club maintains Bicentennial Park, located at the corner of Pondfield Road and Meadow Avenue.
In April and May, they will focus on a new planting design for the back section of the park, funded by a former member.
Through their Tree Fund, Boulder Ledge will also support planting new trees along streets in Bronxville's commercial downtown. This multi-year contribution, along with the village's robust tree-planting budget, helps maintain Bronxville's legacy as a community rich in trees.
Upcoming Activities Of Bronxville Beautificaion Council
This spring, the Bronxville Beautification Council will continue its work of maintaining and refreshing seasonal plantings in public areas throughout Bronxville. Their efforts help make Bronxville particularly lovely in the warmer months when flowering trees and a succession of daffodils, tulips, and other blooms delight the eye in every direction.
