Reformed Church of Bronxville and Rotary Club of Bronxville to Honor George McKinnis and Support GunsDown

Apr. 24, 2019: Please join The Reformed Church of Bronxville and the Bronxville Rotary Club in an evening of great fun and purpose as we honor Judge George C. McKinnis with a Lifetime of Community Service Award for his decades of service presiding over the Bronxville Justice Court and for his variety of positions in village government, community organizations, and Bronxville Rotary.
Throughout his 24 years presiding over the bench, George witnessed youths being sentenced to jail for nonviolent crimes who only returned to his court broken by the trauma of the prison experience and more vulnerable to heightened criminal activity. Together with The Reformed Church of Bronxville, George introduced an alternative to incarceration for eligible young people. Restorative Justice is a yearlong commitment to education, job training, reparation of harm to individuals and community, and mentorship.
This joint benefit is the perfect opportunity to leverage our honoree’s passion for restorative justice with the mission of The Reformed Church’s Coming Home Program, where congregants mentor formerly incarcerated individuals with guidance, planning, and necessary life skills as they re-enter society.
Net proceeds from the benefit will go to support the church’s Coming Home Program by funding worthy needs and projects of program graduates. The first grant will go to GunsDown, a 501(c)(3) organization founded by Coming Home graduate Franz Michel, who, after receiving a commutation of his life sentence from President Obama, dedicated his life to providing alternatives to drugs, gangs, guns, and crime.
GunsDown has had measurable success in reducing crime and recidivism among at-risk youth and the formerly incarcerated through mentoring, recreational activities, computer training, job readiness, and placement programs (www.gunsdown.org). In addition to the financial support, Bronxville Rotary Club members will serve as an advisory board to help ensure GunsDown’s continued growth, development, and sustainability.

Bronxville Beautification Council
Organized in 1982, the Bronxville Beautification Council (BBC) is a not-for-profit organization administered by a volunteer Board of Directors. The mission of the BBC is to enhance and maintain the natural and man-made beauty of the village of Bronxville, with an emphasis on the downtown business district.

Boulder Ledge Garden Club
Founded in 1966, the Boulder Ledge Garden Club is rooted in a mission to inspire a deeper appreciation and love for gardening and flower arranging. The club is dedicated to fostering and promoting interest and knowledge in gardening.
The Club maintains Bronxville’s Bicentennial Park and other civic gardens. In 2019–2020 the club raised $18,000 to replace trees in the village, reflecting its active role in community beautification. It also holds garden therapy projects and educational garden trips for members.

Bronxville Giving Garden
The Bronxville Giving Garden is a community-centered garden that donates organic produce to Eastchester Community Action Partnership in Tuckahoe and Community Service Associates in Mount Vernon. The garden is also a gathering place where school children and volunteers can discover the joy of tending plants and growing food.

The Bronxville Green Committee is a volunteer organization that is part of the Village of Bronxville. It proposes and implements environmentally sustainable programs in our community.

Bronxville Boy Scouts
The village of Bronxville has a long tradition of scouting. “The troops and packs of Bronxville have maintained the finest scouting organizations and have taught the boys of the Bronxville area to be leaders and outstanding members of the local, national and global communities.”
