Bronxville Historical Conservancy Members and Guests Tour Two Museums at Yale University: See Photos

By Suzanne Davis

Dec. 2, 2025: Members and guests of The Bronxville Historical Conservancy traveled by bus on Saturday, November 15, to Yale University where they were led on two remarkable tours. The Yale Center for British Art and The Yale University Art Gallery are both of New Haven's finest art institutions and its many exhibits thrilled the participants. David Nathans, the event's Co-Chair stated, "We were amazed by the size and quality of the two collections.  They rank among the top College museums in the world, and are just over an hour’s drive from Bronxville.  Best of all is that the two museums are housed in Philadelphia architect Louis Kahn’s first and last major commissions.  The day was a veritable feast of art and architecture.”

In between the guided tours, the group walked a short distance to the famed Union League Cafe, where they were enticed by a delicious three-course fall-themed meal. Lisa Rao, who grew up in the area and helped to Co-Chair the event expressed her gratitude for the restaurant's hospitality by stating, " The lively and engaging discussions at every table indicated that our BHC members are hungry for cultural excursions. It was wonderful to get to know our members in such a historic restaurant and discuss all of the beautiful art that was on view at the Museums. "

Everyone agreed that the day was a huge success and by viewing the historical artwork at Yale, helped to inform their own knowledge and appreciation of what Bronxville Village's history offers. The Bronxville Historical Conservancy hopes to schedule some additional trips in the future.

The Bronxville Historical Conservancy, a 501(c)(3), was established in 1998 to further the understanding and appreciation of the history and current life of the Village of Bronxville. The Conservancy furthers its mission through the presentation of programs, publications, lectures, and special events that foster an awareness of the Village's architectural, artistic, and cultural heritage and lends its support for projects designed to strengthen and preserve those legacies.

Bronxville Overview

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.

While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.

Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.

The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
