The goal of this Guide is to provide information about where to vote and also provide basic background information about all the candidates who will be on the ballot for Bronxville residents.

The Candidates

President & Vice President

The United States will hold a Presidential Election on November 5, 2024. This will be the 60th presidential election in United States history. The winner of the 2024 Presidential Election will be sworn into office on January 20, 2025.

The candidates for President and Vice President are as follows:

Kamala Harris & Tim Walz (Democrat)

Kamala Harris is the 49th vice president of the United States. She announced her candidacy for the 2024 presidential election on July 21, 2024, following President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race. 

Harris was born in Oakland, California in 1964.  She graduated from Howard University in 1986 and got her J.D. from the University of California, Hastings in 1989. 

Harris served as the district attorney in San Francisco from 2004 - 2011, as the attorney general of California from 2011-2017, and as a US Senator from California from 2016 - 2021.

Tim Walz is the Governor of Minnesota and Harris' running mate. 

Walz was born in 1964 in Nebraska, graduated from high school in 1982 and enlisted in the Army National Guard at age 17. He graduated from Chadron State College in 1989, taught high school in Nebraska and Minnesota and was also a football coach. He earned an MS at Minnesota State University in 2001 and retired from the Army National Guard in 2005.

He was elected to Congress in 2006, representing Minnesota's first Congressional District, and served in that role until 2019, when he became governor of Minnesota.

Donald J. Trump & JD Vance (Republican)

Donald J. Trump was born in Queens, NY in 1946 and grew up in the Jamaica Estates section of Queens.

He attended the Kew-Forest School from Kindergarten through 7th grade and then went to the New York Military Academy boarding school, graduating in 1964. He then entered the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1968. 

After graduation, he joined his family's real estate company and in 1971 took control of the company, which he renamed the Trump Organization. He also served as the host and executive producer of The Apprentice, a reality television show, from 2004-2015.  Trump's sons, Donald, Jr. and Eric, took over leadership of the Trump Organization in 2017.

Trump became the 45th US President in 2017 after defeating Hillary Clinton.  He then lost to Joe Biden in the 2020 Presidential Election.

JD Vance

JD Vance was born and raised in Middletown, Ohio.  He was primarily raised by his maternal grandparents because his mother struggled with addiction, and his father left the home when JD was six.

Vance went to Middletown High School ('03), enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp, and was deployed to Iraq. 

After returning from Iraq, he went on to Ohio State University ('09) and then Yale Law School ('13).  He then worked for a law firm and an investment firm.  He wrote a bestselling book, Hillbilly Elegy, which was about his life and was turned into a Netflix movie.

Vance was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022 and sworn into office on January 3rd, 2023.  He is currently 40-years old and married to Usha Chilukuri, a Yale Law School classmate.  They have three young children.

Jill Stein & Butch Ware (Green Party)

Jill Stein was born in Chicago and raised in Highland Park, Illinois. She graduated from Harvard College in 1973 and from Harvard Medical School in 1979.  

In her role as a physician, Stein became aware of the links between toxic exposures and illness and began to fight for a healthy environment.  

The three pillars of her platform are "people, planet and peace," including ending discrimination and ensuring "rights, freedom and justice for all," promoting the Green New Deal and investment in green jobs, and ending wars and creating a new foreign policy based on "diplomacy, international law, and human rights to oppose violence, occupation, and apartheid."

Butch Ware was born in Washington DC, and raised in Minneapolis. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1997 and completed his Ph.D. in history at the University of Pennsylvania in 2004. 

Since 2004, Professor Ware has been a faculty member at Northwestern, Michigan, and now UC Santa-Barbara, teaching History, Black Studies, and Islamic Studies.  He is "a leading academic authority on the U.S. Black Radical Tradition, Africa and Islam." 

He has also been an activist and organizer.

Chase Oliver and Mike ter Maat (Libertarian Party)

Chase Oliver was born in Nashville, Tennessee and lives in Atlanta, Georgia. He is 39 years old. He did not go to college; instead, he went to work in the restaurant business, and then in the shipping business.

His first political race was in 2020 when he ran for Congress in a special election in Georgia's 5th Congressional District to complete the term of the late John Lewis.  He then ran for the US Senate in Georgia in 2022. He did not prevail in these races. The Libertarian Party selected Oliver as its presidential nominee on May 26, 2024.  

Oliver's solution to the immigration crisis on the US Southern border is "to create a 20th-century Ellis Island" as a "port of entry" where immigrants will "submit to a basic background check, and if you are good to go, come in and get to work. Come in and live in peace."  With respect to Israel-Gaza, he thinks the US should act as "a neutral arbiter." 

US Senator

Kirsten E. Gillibrand (Dem) - Incumbant

Kirsten Gillibrand is a US Senator.  She was born in Albany, NY. She graduated from Dartmouth College in 1988 and earned a J.D at the University of California in Los Angeles in 1991. She served in Congress from 2007 to 2009 and became a U.S. Senator in 2009 when she was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by Hillary Clinton's resignation. She was then reelected to the Senate in 2012 and 2018 for the term ending January 3, 2025.

Michael D. Sapraicone (Rep)

Mike Sapraicone was born in Richmond Hill, Queens. He earned a high school diploma from Holy Cross High School. He had a long career in law enforcement, serving in the New York Police Department for 20 years (1980 - 2000).  After retiring, he founded a security firm called Squad Security. He has served on numerous boards over the years including Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital, Catholic Youth Organization and the Columbus Citizens Foundation.

Diane Sare (Larouche)

Diane Sare was born in Burlington, Vermont, and grew up in Maine. She currently lives in Rockland County. She graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy in 1983. She attended Hamilton College and then transferred to the New England Conservatory to pursue a music career.

She has worked as a classical musician, choral conductor, and political organizer.  She also worked with former U.S. presidential candidate Lyndon LaRouche for many years. 

She ran for the US House of Representatives in New Jersey's 5th Congressional District in the Democratic Primaries in 2012 and 2014.   

Congress (16th District, which includes Bronxville)

George Latimer (Dem)

George Latimer grew up in Mount Vernon, attended Mount Vernon public schools, and earned a B.A. from Fordham University and a Master’s in Public Administration from New York University. He currently serves as Westchester County Executive.

Latimer's priorities include protecting reproductive freedom, investing in infrastructure, standing with allies abroad, supporting comprehensive immigration reform, and protecting Medicare and Social Security.

Jamaal Bowman was the US Senator from New York's 16th District from Jan. 3, 2021 to Jan. 3, 2025. George Latimer defeated Bowman in the June 25, 2024 Democratic primary for U.S. House of Representatives from New York District 14.

Miriam Levitt Flisser (Rep)

Dr. Miriam Fleisher came to America from Eastern Europe as a child refugee and grew up in the Bronx. She attended the Bronx High School of Science and graduated from New York University's Bronx Campus. She received her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. 

She has lived in Westchester for 40 years and is a pediatrician.

She has also served as the Mayor of Scarsdale and as a medical director of the Bronxville School. 

Issues that are important to her include (1) Immigration and the border.  She is in favor of welcoming vetted immigrants while also securing the borders, (2) incentivizing people to create jobs and buy American, (3) having a foreign policy that focuses on destroying terrorists and regimes that fund them, (4) protecting children, and (5) fighting against federal overreach to preserve our suburban communities.

Shelley B. Mayer (Dem) - Incumbant

Shelley Mayer grew up in Yonkers, and currently lives in Yonkers with her husband. She has three adult children and five grandchildren.

She received a BA from UCLA in 1975 and a JD from SUNY Buffalo School of Law in 1979.

From 1982 to 1994, Mayer was an Assistant Attorney General in the office of New York Attorney General Bob Abrams where she fought to protect civil rights for New Yorkers and to broaden laws protecting consumers and tenants. 

She served in the New York State Assembly for six years and currently represents the 37th District in the New York State Senate. She began her role there in a special election in April 2018 and was reelected in November 2018, 2020, and 2022.  Some issues she has focused on are children and pubic schools. 

Tricia S. Lindsay (Rep)

Tricia Lindsay is a mother, former educator, and civil rights and constitutional law attorney. 

Lindsay graduated from New York University with a B.S. in Nursing, from City University of New York at City College with an M.A. in Secondary Science Education, from Mercy College with an M.S. with Distinction in School Building Leadership, and from Touro College in Islip with a J.D.

She was a teacher and administrator of 24 years in the New York City and Yonkers Public School Districts, and currently has her own law practice and lives in Harrison.

Over the years, she has worked hard with underserved families in her districts to ensure they receive the educational and social services they need.  One way she has accomplished this is through the courts.  She also served as the Chairperson of the Scribes' Institute which focuses on "reducing the opportunity gap and increasing the exposure gap in minority children through literacy and S.T.E.M. training."

State Assembly (88th District, which includes Bronxville)

Amy Paulin (Dem) - Incumbant

Amy Paulin has served the 88th New York State Assembly District, which includes Bronxville, since 2001.  

Paulin was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She is a graduate of the State University of New York at Albany, holds a Master’s degree, and has completed doctoral course work in Criminal Justice from SUNY-Albany. She and her husband, Ira Schuman, live in Scarsdale, and have three children.

Over the years, Paulin has served as the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Energy (2013-2017) and Chair of the Assembly Committee on Corporations, Authorities and Commissions (2018-2022). Some of her important legislative accomplishments include writing and sponsoring the bill that eliminated the statute of limitations for rape, sponsoring the landmark Trafficking Victims Protection and Justice Act, and authoring the Birth Control Access Act, which expanded access to birth control for New Yorkers.

She has served on numerous Boards and was inducted into the Westchester Women’s Hall of Fame by the Women’s Research and Education Fund.

Thomas H. Fix Jr. (Rep)

Thomas Fix Jr. is a life long resident of Eastchester. He has a degree in Business from Iona University, and for over 30 years he was a co-owner of his family's business, Cornell’s True Value Hardware in Eastchester.  He and his wife Megan have two children - Amelia, 14, and TJ, 12.

For the past ten years, he has served on the Eastchester Traffic & Parking Advisory Committee.  He also coaches his children's sports teams. 

Fix is concerned about "the rise in violent crime, lack of support for local law-enforcement, excessive government spending leading to increased inflation, and government overreach in our schools and local government."
