Non-Partisan Committee Begins Search for 2014 School Board Candidates; Meeting January 28

Jan. 15, 2014:  The Committee for the Non-Partisan Nomination and Election of School Trustees (NPC), which is beginning its 78th year of serving the Bronxville community, announced that it has commenced its 2014 search for candidates to serve as Bronxville School trustees.

An open meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 28, at 7:30 pm in the Yeager Room of the Bronxville Public Library. At the meeting, the NPC will solicit input from the community on the selection of school board candidates. The NPC particularly wishes to hear what members of the community feel are the most important issues facing the school and what qualifications and characteristics the community would like to see in their school trustees.

The NPC encourages all Bronxville residents to attend this important meeting. Those unable to attend the meeting can email questions to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Please include your name and address, as anonymous questions will not be accepted. Questions will be selected at random and directed to our special guest panel.

Dr. David Quattrone, superintendent of the Bronxville schools, and Mr. David Brashear, president of the Bronxville Board of Education, will address the NPC and the community to provide their views on the job of school trustee and the significant issues facing the school and the board.

This spring, the NPC will nominate two candidates (one for each of the two open seats) to run in the May school district election.

According to NPC chair Anne Cox, "The NPC was formed by the community and collectively tasked with vetting school board nominees to identify the most qualified candidates to serve on the school board. The NPC is comprised of 21 members, three from each of the village's seven voting districts, elected to serve three-year terms. Each committee member contributes his/her views as to what makes the ideal candidate. We urge community members to take advantage of this open meeting, to become a part of the NPC process, and to express their views."

Residents are encouraged to provide feedback to their district's representatives or to contact any member of the committee. A full listing can be found on the NPC website: www.bronxvillenpc.com

Any resident who is interested in running for school trustee or who would like to suggest candidates should contact the NPC as soon as possible.

To be considered by the NPC, individuals must submit an application to the NPC by Friday, February 28, 2014.  Again, details and application forms are available on NPC website.

The nominating process begins in January with weekly NPC meetings attended by current trustees of the board of education and the school superintendent for the purposes of familiarizing itself with the issues and challenges facing the school. The feedback received is used by the NPC to define search criteria in the current year's BOE trustee candidates.

During March, the NPC will perform an evaluation of each applicant, including interviews and reference checks. On April 1, the NPC will meet to nominate one candidate for each open seat on the school board to be placed on the ballot in the district-wide election. The community will have the opportunity to meet with the nominated candidates at a reception at the Bronxville Public Library on Tuesday, April 29, at 7:30 pm.

To propose candidates, to nominate yourself, or for more information about becoming a part of the NPC, please contact the NPC chair, Anne Cox, at This email address is being protected from spambots. Bronxville Overview

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.

While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.

Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.

The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
