May 13, 2026: Last weekend, I had the opportunity to visit Maltby Park in Bronxville. This lovely 2.7-acre park is located near the Village of Bronxville’s paddle tennis courts. It features a fun play area for children, picnic tables, a walking path, and many beautiful trees and plantings, which create inviting spaces to relax.
This beautiful park is the result of the hard work of Bronxville resident Ashley Sharpe, former Bronxville Village Trustee Mary Taylor Behrens, Bronxville Mayor Mary Marvin, and the Bronxville Village Trustees, along with the generosity of many Bronxville residents and a grant from New York State.

As retired Trustee Behrens explained, in 2023, Ashley Sharpe approached Mayor Marvin with the idea of adding another children's park to the Village. The Village Board agreed that this was a great idea and determined that the area near the Bronxville village paddle courts, which was underutilized, would be the perfect location for the park.
Mary Taylor Behrens became the Trustee point person for the project. She explained that the funding for this park was unique due to a public/private partnership, that included generous support from many members of the Bronxville community, funding from the Village, and a grant from New York State. The names of the supporters of this project can be seen on plaques throughout the park today.
"Through Sharpe's vision, the support of the Village Trustees, and the implementation by Jim Palmer and his staff, the new park became a reality," said Behrens.
You might wonder why this park is named Maltby Park. This green space was named in the 1950s in honor of Ralph B. Maltby, who served as Mayor of Bronxville from 1942 to 1951. He lived at 31 Masterton Road and was a prominent executive with the St. Regis Paper Company. Ralph Maltby passed away in 1952 at the age of 75.

Fun Fact: Interestingly, the Review Press and Reporter, a newspaper that operated for many years in Bronxville before closing in 2009, published several articles in the mid-1950s about Maltby Park. These articles revealed that the Village considered developing a skating rink on this land; however, the idea ultimately did not come to fruition. Wouldn't that have been fun!
Today, the park boasts many new trees and flowers, a spacious great lawn, and a welcoming archway. It is filled with delighted children and families enjoying picnics, running, playing, and scooting along the path.
This park exemplifies how community efforts can truly make a difference.
Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.
While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.
Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.
The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
