Bronxville Police Blotter: March 26 to April 7, 2015

Thursday, March 26
:  At 12:49 pm police officers responded to a complaint of a male selling New York Mets tickets on Pondfield Road. The 38-year-old Vail, Colorado, man was issued a verbal warning and was advised of the village codes requiring soliciting permits. 

Friday, March 27:  At 6:59 am at the Lawrence Hospital emergency room, Lawrence Hospital security requested officer assistance for an unruly patient who refused to leave until she was given cab fare by hospital staff. The 25-year-old Bronxville woman left of her own accord after being interviewed by officers.

Friday, March 27:  At 5:45 pm at 114 Pondfield Road, police officers observed a 38-year-old Jersey City man aggressively panhandling outside the CVS store. The man became verbally aggressive to those who did not give him money upon his request. The man left the area of his own accord after being interviewed by officers, who determined that he was not in need of medical assistance.

Saturday, March 28:  At 7:15 am on Pondfield Road and Tanglewylde Avenue, police officers, along with the Eastchester Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the Eastchester Fire Department, rendered aid to a 65-year-old man who momentarily lost consciousness and collapsed. The man regained consciousness and was transported to Lawrence Hospital.

Tuesday, March 31:  At 1:08 pm a Bronxville couple reported that they were unable to file taxes because someone had already filed using their Social Security numbers. The incident is under investigation by detectives.

Friday, April 3:  At 10:43 am a 60-year-old resident on Willow Road reported that her credit card had been used fraudulently for a $662 purchase from the Home Shopping Network. The incident is being investigated by detectives. 

Friday, April 3:  At 2:46 pm 24-year-old Touray Blackwood of the Bronx was arrested at 95 Pondfield Road [in front of] Citibank by Police Officer Martin Dentini and Detective William Carroll in the commission of attempting to cash a fraudulent check in the amount of $1,400. Blackwood was processed and charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree (class D felony). He was arraigned by Judge George McKinnis and released on $1,000 cash bail. His next court appearance is April 15, 2015, at 6:00 pm. 

Sunday, April 6:  At 5:12 pm at Midland Gardens, an 18-year-old male was arrested by Police Officer Michael Lewis and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana after officers responded to an anonymous call from a male who observed the defendant smoking what he believed to be marijuana in the area.

Monday, April 7:  At 2:45 am officers responded to [a call from] the Lawrence Hospital emergency room to assist security with a combative patient. The 26-year-old male patient was highly intoxicated and verbally combative. Officers were able to defuse the situation and leave the patient in the care of hospital security, as no crime had been committed.

Bronxville Overview

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.

While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.

Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.

The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
