Seven-Week Investigation Leads to Eight Arrests; Charges Include Mail Theft and Bank Fraud

Jun. 6, 2018: On April 12, 2018, Bronxville Police Department detectives developed information that individuals may be using the Bronxville Trustco Bank located at 5-7 Park Place to make fraudulent bank transactions.
Investigation revealed that checks stolen from the mail were being deposited into accounts opened with fraudulent documents and subsequently withdrawals were being made from the accounts. A seven-week investigation and surveillance conducted by the Bronxville Police Department with the assistance of Westchester County Assistant District Attorneys Adrian Murphy and John Thomas concluded with the arrest of the following individuals.

During a surveillance conducted by the Bronxville Police Department, 26-year-old Chaz Broadnax and 29-year-old Andrew Barrington, both of the Bronx, were charged with Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the Second Degree (D Felony) after a bank manager reported that Andrew Barrington was in the Bronxville branch attempting to complete a fraudulent transaction. Search incident to lawful arrest led to the discovery of a fraudulent check valued at $13,963.20. The check found in the possession of Broadnax and Barrington is believed to have been stolen from the mail. Both were arraigned by Judge George Mayer and remanded to Westchester County Jail in lieu of $10,000.00 bail.

During a surveillance conducted by the Bronxville Police Department, 29-year-old Antoinette Williams of the Bronx was arrested after withdrawing $9,800.00 from an account opened with fraudulent documents. Antionette was charged with Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the Second Degree (D Felony) and Grand Larceny in the 3rd Degree (D Felony).
Also arrested was 29-year-old Taylor Williams of the Bronx. Williams was charged with 2 Counts of Grand Larceny in the 3rd Degree (D felony) for withdrawing $7,506.00 on 04/06/2018 from an account opened with fraudulent documents. He was also charged for his role in withdrawing the $9,800.00 on 04/13/2018.
Further investigation after the above arrest led to an additional charge for Antionette Williams of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the Second Degree (D Felony). It is alleged that on April 3, 2018, Williams entered the Bronxville Trustco Bank and deposited a $51,749.76 check that was stolen from the mail into a bank account opened with fraudulent documents.

During a surveillance conducted by the Bronxville Police Department of mailboxes within the Village of Bronxville a black SUV approached a United States postal mailbox, a passenger exited the vehicle. The passenger proceeded to steal mail from the box and get back into the vehicle. Bronxville Police arrested 24-year-old Leovigildo Ramos and 17-year-old Jordy Bulgos both of the Bronx. Both were charged with Grand Larceny in the Third Degree (D Felony).
Bulgos was found to be in the possession of a United States postal arrow key, which can be used to access postal mailboxes.
A third subject, a juvenile, was also taken into custody and later released to a parent.
As a result of the ongoing investigation by the Bronxville Police Department, an additional arrest was made. On May 22, 2018, Bronxville detectives arrested Toniann Stahl outside of her residence in the Bronx. Stahl was charged with Grand Larceny in the Third Degree (D Felony). The investigation revealed that on March 3, 2018, Stahl entered the Bronxville Trustco Bank and deposited a check stolen from the mail in the amount of $14,697.65.

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.
Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.
The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
