Jan. 17, 2018:  On Monday, January 22, at 7:00 pm, Dr. Denise Pope, co-founder of Challenge Success and an education professor at Stanford University, will visit The Bronxville School. Her talk will focus on the heightened academic and social pressures children are facing and how, as parents, we can best support our children’s development and well-being in this performance-based culture.

Dr. Pope will share practical, research-based strategies to help parents navigate our fast-paced, competitive culture. Denise Pope is the author of "Doing School": How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed Out, Materialistic, and Miseducated Students, which was awarded Notable Book in Education by the American School Board Journal, 2001, and co-author of Overloaded and Underprepared: Strategies for Stronger Schools and Healthy, Successful Kids.

During the spring of 2017, Bronxville Middle and High School students were among 40,000 students from high-performing schools across the country to take the online survey that is administered by the Challenge Success program, a nonprofit group associated with the Stanford Graduate School of Education. The survey findings are helping to guide Bronxville School officials in deciding which policies and practices might be effective or in need of improvement. The Challenge Success Program has been funded by a Bronxville School Foundation grant award, requested by the high school and middle school principals as a way to assess our students’ well-being in connection with their academic engagement at school.

As part of the ongoing work with Challenge Success, a group of administrators, parents, and students attended the Challenge Success conference at Stanford University. “Bridget and I were thrilled to participate in the Challenge Success conference at Stanford University last September. We got to meet in person students and administrators from numerous schools who have partnered with Challenge Success and learn about the changes they’ve implemented to create an environment that allows students to learn and grow in a more healthy and balanced manner without sacrificing academic rigor,” said Suzette Sands, the high school council chair and parent of three Bronxville School students.

Womrath Bookshop will make available Dr. Pope’s books at the event.
