Bronxville Athletes Receive Top Honors from New York Sportswriters Association and Journal News

July 13, 2011: Bronxville High School students had some amazing athletic performances during the 2010-2011 school year, and the athletes continue to be recognized for their accomplishments.
The New York Sportswriters Association just announced the winners of the Kerr Cup All-Sport Championship, which recognizes the top athletic programs in New York State. In girls only scoring, Bronxville was ranked number one in Class B, while the boys finished in third place just behind Cazenovia and Burke Catholic. Overall the Bronxville athletic program is ranked second in the state for Class B schools. Points for the Kerr Cup were assigned based on results from championship tournaments and meets.
In the past week, the Journal News published its spring All-Star selection, and many spring Bronco athletes received recognition. The 4x800m girls' relay team often wins top honors, but this year both the boys' and girls' 4x800m relay teams were named to the Westchester/Putnam First Team. The girls' team ran the fourth fastest time in U.S. history at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals, breaking the nine-minute mark with a time of 8:49.85. The boys' team qualified for states, finishing fourth in Division II.
Freshman Mary Cain was named girls' track athlete of the season for her incredible performances this spring. Cain broke the New York State 1500m record with a time of 4:17.84, a national freshman record and the seventh fastest time in U.S. history.
Four other Broncos were named to the Journal News All-Star First Team: Dayton Flannery, Henry Palermo, Charlie McCormick, and Ian Palfrey. Junior Dayton Flannery qualified for the state track meet in the steeplechase and finished 2nd at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals held in June. Senior Henry Palermo won the Division 2 shot put competition at states and came in 2nd in the Federation. Lacrosse player Charlie McCormick was named First Team midfielder and finished his senior season with 80 goals. Finally, junior Ian Palfrey, who played golf on the Bronco team for the first time this season, finished 3rd in the section and 17th in the state.
Second Team honors went to sophomore Meredith Rizzo for girls' track, junior Taylor Reynolds for girls' lacrosse, and senior Jack Near for boys' lacrosse.
The following athletes were awarded honorable mention recognition: Billy Casperson, Henry Grass, Jack Grass, Jack Near, and Andrew Walsh for boys' lacrosse; Lara Florek, Megan Murray, and Jessica Tarangioli for girls' lacrosse; Jackson Conway for baseball; Jimmy Purdy for tennis; and Claire Sargent for shot put.
