Bronxville School PTA Plans Fun-Filled Memorial Day Weekend; See Schedule for Each Day

May 2, 2012: T-shirts featuring a Memorial Day logo created by two fifth graders from the Bronxville Elementary School go on sale for $15 each this Thursday and Friday.
This year's raffle will also have a local theme, with prizes donated by local merchants and residents. They include a collection of caviar, pâté, and champagne; a cheese platter with wine and cheese; a haircut and styling; a facial and a massage; and Bronco paraphernalia. Raffle tickets go on sale for $10 each at the elementary school on Thursday, May 24, at drop-off and pick-up.
Here's the lineup of activities sponsored by the Bronxville PTA for the big weekend.
Friday, May 25
Cupcake Café: The weekend kicks off on Friday, May 25, with a school-wide bake sale known as the Cupcake Café, featuring treats donated by Bronxville families. The goods for this PTA fundraiser range from simple sugar cookies to elaborate cakes and pies. Many feature Memorial Day decorations designed by the kids. There's something for everyone, so please stop by. The café will be open for business from 7:30 am to noon at the Meadow Avenue entrance and from 2:50 pm to 4:00 pm on the elementary school blacktop. The traditional dollar raffle for kids will also be held on Friday.
Used Book Sale: Located in the school's multipurpose room, the sale features books, CDs, and DVDs donated ahead of time by Bronxville families. It's a great way to be green and reuse these materials while raising money for the PTA. The sale will be open for business on Friday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Saturday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, and Monday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Saturday, May 26
James E. Kearney Run for Fun: The annual James E. Kearney Run for Fun starts at 9:00 am at the school flagpole on Pondfield Road and finishes back at the school. Same-day registration for the 2.5-mile run/walk through scenic Bronxville neighborhoods begins at 7:45 am.
Bronxville Veteran's Memorial: An exhibit of photos and other memorabilia featuring Bronxville veterans dating back to World War I will be on display on Saturday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm and on Monday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Elementary School South Playroom. Visitors will have a chance to ponder the true meaning of Memorial Day.
Family Picnic: The traditional family picnic will be held on Saturday from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm on the school field. Bring a blanket, food, friends, and family. There will be old-fashioned games for the kids (think tug of war), music, and free ice cream. The fee is $5 per person.
Monday, May 28
The Memorial Day Parade begins at 9:00 am on the west side of town by the railroad tracks in Leonard Morange Square and proceeds under the viaduct down Pondfield Road through the business district, past the post office to The Bronxville School. On the front yard of the school the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and other dignitaries will participate in a ceremony to honor the war dead, and Mayor Mary C. Marvin will give the annual Memorial Day address. George Palmer will be the honorary grand marshal of the parade.
Carnival Games on the School Field: After the parade, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, the school field will once again give way to the PTA carnival sponsored by Bronxville-Ley Real Estate. There will be games and activities for the kids, including plenty of water activities, so bring bathing suits. The Bronxville Boy Scouts will serve burgers and treats.
Blood Drive: The New York Blood Bank will run a blood drive on Monday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in the elementary school gym. Members of the Eastchester Volunteer Ambulance Corps also will be on hand to explain what they do.
