Four Bronxville School Teachers to Retire at End of School Year: See Their Comments

Apr. 30, 2014: The retirement on June 30 of four long-serving and experienced Bronxville teachers was announced at the March 1, 2014, meeting of the Bronxville Board of Education meeting. They are:
Anthony Angotta, high school English teacher with 32 years of service
Maryellen Mullin, kindergarten teacher with 25 years of service
Marcia Sklar, high school special education teacher with 24 years of service
Susan Williams, fourth grade teacher with 17 years of service
School board president David Brashear expressed appreciation to each of the retirees, and Superintendent David Quattrone noted that the PTA sponsors a recognition event in early June for teachers and the Bronxville Teachers' Association holds an end-of-year retirement dinner.
Dr. David Katz, president of the Bronxville Teachers' Association and a social studies teacher in the middle school, thanked the members of the board for reflecting on the teachers' collective 98 years of service. He referred to the long-reaching influence of these teachers. He stated that it would not be easy to replace them, and he commented that the loss in terms of leadership to the district is something unusual and worthy of note.
MyhometownBronxville asked the retirees to comment briefly on the courses they taught, their experiences at The Bronxville School, and their retirement plans. The following are their responses:
Anthony Angotta: I have taught all levels of high school English in my career at BHS. Courses have ranged from remedial English to Advanced Placement Language and Composition. I currently am teaching four sections of seniors and one sophomore class. I have enjoyed the students the most. At any level, they have consistently been attentive, respectful, and polite. I will miss all of them. I plan to golf, travel, and spend time with my two wonderful grandchildren, Joseph and Mickayla, in the years to come.
Maryellen Mullin: I have been a kindergarten teacher all of my 25 years at The Bronxville School and I have loved it. I thoroughly enjoyed being our youngest learners’ first experience in the big school and took that responsibility very seriously. Kindergartners are unique and special in many ways. They are excited, hungry learners by nature and so they come to school each day eager to see what we were going to be doing. One of my favorite things was to inject music into as many parts of our day as I could. A song for letter sounds, days of the week, months--you name it. Sometimes we would make up songs together. At the end of the year, every student took home a CD of kindergarten music. In my retirement I hope to continue sharing music with my grandchildren and tackle those many projects that have been waiting for me.
Marcia Sklar: When I first came to Bronxville, there were only four of us to cover the middle school and high school resource rooms. I loved the challenge, and I was a wiz at Jeopardy. Now I primarily teach 11th grade in the resource room. I have enjoyed keeping and looking at 24 years of pictures and articles of Bronco Sports that cover my walls. I plan to take all of my cherished memories of students and colleagues with me. I plan to continue with my antique business and do more out-of-state antique shows. Most important, I aim to "live long and prosper."
Susan Williams is on medical leave and was unable to respond.
