It Takes a Village to Celebrate Memorial Day!; See Photos

May 28, 2014: A diligent and dedicated army of volunteers from the Bronxville School PTA, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts, along with other generous community members, all had a hand in transforming Hayes Field from workaday practice field into a festive community gathering place for Memorial Day.
Hundreds of people of all ages--sun-worshippers, those in a quest for a shady place, thrill-seekers--poured through the gates of the field to enjoy the holiday with family and friends. Dads carried backpacks laden with water bottles, hats, and other family necessities while moms pushed strollers.
The enticing aroma of hot dogs and hamburgers cooking on grills filled the field and attracted hungry revelers to the Boy Scout tent. The Girl Scouts offered cupcakes for sale to those who preferred something sweet.
Colorful attractions lined the perimeter of Hayes Field and in only a few minutes long lines formed at the most popular attractions like the Wrecking Ball, a pendulum-like swing that twisted in as it swung higher and higher. As the day warmed up, lines for the waterslides grew longer.
The dollar raffle booth and Bronco wear booths enjoyed a brisk business. Several popular Bronco wear items sold out by noon, a testament to school spirit.
The Memorial Day event capped almost a week of events at The Bronxville School and was coordinated under the guidance of PTA Memorial Day co-chairs Suzanne Pratt Davis and Leana Patel.
Jocelyn Angelone and Molly Bianco chaired the used-book sale. The James E. Kearney Run for Fun was organized by Lia Gravier and Courtney Burgin. Ruth Walter and Sarah Normand headed the dog parade and show. Laura Pettee and Jane Scotti took the reins for the dollar raffle. Jen Lescott and Patty Knox coordinated the cupcake café.
Ron Mager managed the Boy Scout barbecue tent with a group of dads who cooked and enthusiastic Scouts who served as runners to fill orders. Mary Massa arranged the Girl Scout bake sale. "Both of these organizations are important PTA partners," said PTA president Margaret Mager. "They both donate all of their labor and give their proceeds to the PTA."
All evidence points to a great Memorial Day success for the Bronxville School PTA and the community.
