Oct. 22, 2014: On Friday, October 3, members of Team Chapel partnered with Broken Bow Brewery in Tuckahoe to hold a fundraising event. Team Chapel is a group of four runners who will be running the New York City Marathon this November. The team is raising money for The Chapel School's scholarship fund.
The event was organized by team member George Heath in conjunction with Broken Bow Brewery. Family, friends, and supporters of Team Chapel enjoyed a cabaret, beer tasting, and delicious food. Members of Team Chapel were at the event and received encouragement and well wishes. The event was a fundraiser and pre-race celebration to bring the community together and celebrate the training Team Chapel has been doing. The runners have raised over $1,800 so far.
"I wanted to put on an event that combined two of my favorite things--music and beer," stated George Heath. "What better way to support this great cause than by enjoying an evening with family and friends." Those in attendance were also treated to games and raffles. "I'm so excited and proud of my brother," stated Kate Marino, whose brother Dave Porter is one of the members of Team Chapel. "He couldn't make it down for the event, but I am happy to sing and entertain on his behalf."
Each of the runners has a special connection to The Chapel School. George Heath is the music teacher for grades 3 to 8 and is also the parent of two Chapel School students. His brother-in-law Randy Watkins is also running on the team. "I am excited to raise money for my nieces' school and to run this marathon in November." Anderson Kenny is a parent of two Chapel School students. "It is a wonderful school that has benefited our family greatly." The final member of Team Chapel is Dave Porter. His sister is The Chapel School's music teacher for preschool through second grade, Mrs. Kate (Porter) Marino. "I look forward to completing my first full marathon in NYC in support of The Chapel School."
The team coach and senior pastor of the church and school, Rev. Dr. Robert Hartwell, helped form the charity run several years ago. Each runner must raise at least $3,000, and collectively the team is hoping to reach and surpass $15,000 before running the 26.2 miles. Donations are welcome and are being accepted at www.teamchapel.com.
