Bronxville Elementary School Recruits 'Teacher Residents'

Apr. 8, 2015: The Bronxville School hosted an open house on March 24 for college students aspiring to be in the teacher residents program. Representatives from LIU Hudson, Long Island University's campus in Westchester, and members of the Bronxville school district participated in the session.
Tevon Troja, '08 graduate of Bronxville High School and current student at LIU/Hudson, said of the open house, "It was great to learn more about the program and to hear from administrators, elementary school teachers, and current residents."
The Bronxville open house marked the expansion of Bronxville's teacher residency program, which provides a limited number of paid, clinically rich, full-year experiences for future teachers. The teacher residents learn from Bronxville teachers and administrators and university professionals, all of whom prepare teaching candidates to take on the challenges of the classroom. As LIU Hudson's associate dean for program and partnership development, Dr. Lea Rutmanowitz, explained, "LIU Hudson and Bronxville schools are seeking the best and brightest to take part in the residency program."
Elementary school Assistant Principal Adrienne Laitman outlined the many benefits of the program. She stated, "Unlike a typical student-teaching experience, Bronxville teacher residents become an integral part of our school community for an entire year. As full-fledged members of grade-level teams, residents are involved in high-level professional development and curriculum planning. Along with learning from master teachers, residents spend part of their time as substitutes. This ensures that Bronxville students have knowledgeable, highly skilled instructors in the room when their teachers are absent. Overall, this program provides new educators with exceptional field experience while also ensuring consistent quality instruction for the students in the district."
Applications for the 2015-2016 teacher residency cohort are still being accepted. Appointments will be awarded on a competitive basis. Candidates presenting appropriate academic credentials who are prepared to begin master's degree coursework in the summer or fall of 2015 are welcome to learn more about it by visiting the LIU Hudson website at http://www.liu.edu/Hudson/About/News-Events/Press Releases/2015/February/Bronxville-Teacher-Residency or by contacting Dr. Rebecca Rich at
