Aug. 26, 2015: Jennifer Forsberg, the new director of technology at The Bronxville School, can't remember a time when she wasn't interested in technology. Her interest in using computers led her to take accounting classes in high school because she was able to use a computer in her classes.
"I have always been interested in math and technology," Forsberg said. "When I was a teacher, I was the one who volunteered to try something new in my classroom."
Trying new pursuits and expanding horizons has been a hallmark of Forsberg's development as an educator. Although the Grand Island, Nebraska, native entered the University of Nebraska-Lincoln intending to become an accountant, she had a minor in education.
During her sophomore year, Forsberg decided she wanted to be an elementary school psychologist or an elementary school guidance counselor, so she changed her major to psychology. After moving to Westchester in 1998 "to try something different for a year," Forsberg earned a master's degree in teaching from Pace University, gained her K-6 certification, and began teaching.
While teaching math and science at Bank Street School in Manhattan, Forsberg took advantage of the opportunity to pursue an additional master's degree, this one in educational leadership, at Bank Street College of Education, which earned her certification as a school building leader as well as a school district leader.
"I just never went back to Nebraska," she laughed.
Forsberg comes to The Bronxville School after eight years in the Ossining Union Free School District. "When I was working in the city and wanted to come back to Westchester," she said, "the door was open as to the administrative positions I could apply for."
As the assistant director of technology for the Ossining district, Forsberg was able to take an active role in instruction, curriculum, and professional development.
"I hope people see me as approachable," Forsberg said. "I want to be approachable if parents have questions or ideas or concerns. I enjoy working with the community and parents to form partnerships."
For the immediate future, Forsberg will direct her efforts toward a smooth opening of the 2015-2016 school year on September 8. "Our short-term goal is to make sure everything works as best as it can," she said. "It will be sort of an hourly process and if there are any bumps I will see what I can do."
Over the longer term, Forsberg noted, she looks forward to working with Google Apps for Education, which was introduced at the school last year. "I'm excited to continue what the teachers and students have started," she said.
What Jennifer Forsberg is most looking forward to, however, is meeting everyone at The Bronxville School, faculty, staff, and students alike.
