Jul. 6, 2016: Michael Schultz was recently named the next principal at The Chapel School in Bronxville, where he has a long personal history.
Baptized and confirmed at Village Lutheran Church and a 1982 graduate of The Chapel School, Schultz went on to graduate from Bronxville High School (1986) and Concordia College (1990), where he was an NCAA Div. II All-American baseball player.
After a short stint in professional baseball and an even shorter time working in finance/technology in New York City, Schultz worked in graphic design and marketing while paving the way to his career in education. After earning his master's degree in education from Iona College (1996), he was hired as a sixth-grade teacher and athletic director at The Chapel School.
In 1999, newly called principal Jim Dhyne named Schultz as assistant principal, and together they led The Chapel School through a major construction and renovation project that was completed in November of 2002.
Over the course of the next fourteen years, Schultz, Dhyne, and Village Lutheran Church senior pastor Rev. Dr. Robert Hartwell led a tremendous faculty and staff through the exciting expansion of programming in academics, athletics, music, drama, art, and service learning, which has culminated in a thriving school that was recently recognized by Westchester magazine in its listings of "Best of Westchester" for 2016.
"I am very excited," Schultz said. "Village Lutheran Church and The Chapel School have always been a special place to me, and I have truly been blessed to be part of its journey for most of the past 47 years. The Best of Westchester recognition is fantastic, but we have only scratched the surface. When I consider this next chapter for The Chapel School and working with our wonderful faculty, staff, and new leadership team, I am so encouraged by the seemingly limitless possibilities God has set before us as we continue to help the children and families entrusted to our care 'To Know, Live, and Share the Love of Christ,'" he added.
"Principal Schultz has a long and well-respected history at Village Lutheran Church and The Chapel School. As we celebrate the 70th anniversary of The Chapel School in the new academic year, he brings a great understanding of our history and many new ideas and plans for the future. It is an exciting time for our school and I am looking forward to seeing Principal Schultz lead our beloved school into our bright future," said Rev. Dr. Robert Hartwell.
Schultz lives in Bronxville with his wife, Erika, and three children. Tyler (TCS '11, BHS '15) just completed his freshman year at SUNY Oneonta; Alyson (TCS '13) is entering her senior year at Bronxville High School; and Lyndsie is entering her eighth-grade year at The Chapel School.
The Schultz name has been synonymous with leadership and Christian education in Bronxville since 1961. Schultz's father, Dr. Ralph C. Schultz, retired from 37 years of service to Concordia College in 1998, the last 22 as president, and his mother, Dorothy, served the community for 22 years as a beloved kindergarten teacher at The Chapel School. She retired in 1997.
