Broncos Win Season's First League Game: Next Up, Tuckahoe

By Jack Reilly, Co-Captain, Bronxville High School Football Team
Sep. 21, 2016: The Bronxville football team beat Haldane 40-15 on Saturday afternoon in its first game in Class C/D. The Broncos took an early lead on a 35-yard touchdown run by senior captain Malachi Flanagan and never looked back, scoring 20 unanswered points because of the physical play by Bronxville's offensive and defensive front. This victory came after a tough 34-14 loss to the Hackley Hornets in the Broncos' season opener, and the team seemed to be on a mission this Saturday.
"We knew we needed to come out with more energy," said Flanagan, who rushed for 157 yards and two scores on Saturday. Last week we came out flat and got burned. This week our practices were intense and high energy, and our game followed suit."

Senior captain and quarterback Brian DePaul thought that it was all about the Broncos' attitude change from their first contest. "We went out there with an attitude that we aren't going to lose this game. If we come out like that every game, our team will start turning people's heads."
In his second year as the Broncos' starting QB, DePaul seems to have shined in his leadership role and has the ability to make plays in the air or with his feet. While the Bronco seniors are a huge factor for the team's success, it was the junior class that really stood out in Saturday's game against Haldane. Damian Meehan rushed for four touchdowns, Avery Kane anchored the offensive and defensive lines, and Dylan James, who started on the team last year as a sophomore, brought his fearlessness and will to lead the Bronco defense.

While the Broncos have been plagued by injuries to star players, including linebacker Jeff Sargent, wide receiver Arman Vranka, and their star tackle, Ben von Mehren, they appear to be a talented bunch that work well together as a unit.
With next week bringing on the crosstown rivalry of Tuckahoe, the Broncos are sure to face a test as they head into enemy territory to take on the Tigers. With league play ahead, this Saturday's 1:30 pm kickoff at Tuckahoe will be a great test for the Broncos to see if they can rise up in one of the biggest rivalries in Section I.
Go Broncos.
