Boys' and Girls' Track and Field Win Leagues: Kaitlin Ryan Breaks Bronxville School Record in the 600m
Written by S. Quinn DeJoy and J. Murrer
Jan. 28, 2015: Both the girls' and boys' track and field teams placed first at the League 3B Championships held last Thursday at The Armory. The girls' team ran over the competition, scoring 248 points and earning its 34th consecutive league title. The second-place team, Ardsley, scored 82. The boys' team earned its 10th consecutive win, defeating second-place Edgemont 150-117. League 3B is made up of Bronxville, Ardsley, Edgemont, Sleepy Hollow, Woodlands, and Tuckahoe.
Sophomore Kaitlin Ryan broke the Bronxville school record in the 600m with a time of 1:34.86. Elizabeth Bergold set the previous record (1:35.30) in 2003. Ryan's outstanding time ranks her third in the US in the 600m for high school girls.
"Kaitlin has been having a great winter," said Coach Jim Mitchell. "Her win in the 600m was by six seconds, and she said afterwards that she perhaps could have gone a second faster. It was her first 600m ever."
Earlier this winter, Ryan just missed the Bronxville school record in the 1000m, and she may get another chance at it later this season. At the Yale Invitational last week, her anchor mile was 5:00.05 and gave the team the number-one ranking in the US, which was later surpassed by two teams.
The girls' team, led by captains Nicole Giangola, Nicola Phillips, and Caroline DePaul, had over 60 athletes participate at the league championships, and each team member participated in one or two events. The boys' team, however, is about half the size of the girls' team, and therefore many of the boys had to participate in two or three events.
"We are not that big of a team, so lots of people run multiple events," said senior Guy McKhann. McKhann, one of the team captains, had a first-place finish in the 1000m and was also part of the winning 4x800m relay. Steven Ircha, who finished first in the shot put, Nick Sutherland, who took first in the 300m, and Sean Ryan are also team captains.
The Bronxville relay teams swept the competition, winning the boys' and girls' 4x200m, 4x400m, and 4x800m relays.
First-place finishes earn All-League recognition, and a second-place finish is All-League honorable mention. See results below for athletes who finished in the top six places.
Go Broncos.
