Dec. 18, 2024: The Bronxville indoor track and field teams opened the season in December at the Section 1 Kickoff meet, and a week later competed in the Jim Mitchell Invitational. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams are poised to have a successful season after winning their respective Class C League, County and Sectional Championships last year. Both teams have many returning state-qualifying athletes.
Wyatt Gravier and Kieran McBride return after having had top finishes at the 2024 Indoor State Championships. Last March, Gravier placed 10th in the 55m hurdles and McBride placed 4th in the 1600m. Also qualifying for the Indoor State Championship last winter were Maddy Williams, who placed 21st in the 1500m, and the 4x400m relay team of Juliet Winiecki, Eva Mihova, Ella McCalla, Kara Kochansky.
Many members of the 2024 football team have moved on to compete in indoor track this season. They bring both speed and strength to the team.
Gravier, who played wide receiver and d-back for the football team, won the Westchester County title last year in both the 55m hurdles and the high jump, and Davis Patterson, running back and d-back for the Broncos, won the 2024 County title in the 300m and 600m
At the Section 1 Kickoff meet on December 8th, Patterson and Gravier opened the winter season with two wins: Patterson placed first in the 1000m (2:47.09), and Gravier placed first in the high jump (6-0). Gravier continued his success last weekend at the Jim Mitchell Invitational by winning the 55m hurdles in 7.47. The Mitchell Invitational, which included 43 teams from New York and New Jersey, featured some of the best track and field athletes in the area.
Additional members of the 2024 football team competing in field events include Matthew McSherry, Alex Napolitano, Jack Preusse, Henry Xu, and Henry Frigon. At the Section 1 Kickoff meet, McSherry placed 6th in the shotput with a throw of 39-2, and Napolitano placed 2nd in the weight throw with 51-8.
Another athlete to watch from the boys’ team is Vincent D’Amato who placed 1st in the triple jump in 38-7.25.
The girls’ team had a great start to the season at the Mitchell Invitational. Juliet Winiecki, who qualified for three events at the Outdoor State Championships last year, placed 4th in the 55m hurdles (8.98) and 2nd in the long jump (15-10).
Also finishing in the top ten were Kara Kochansky (300m dash, 6th, 42.38), Finlay Rowan (600m, 8th, 1:41.08), Carina Winiecki, (1000m, 8th, 3:09.12), Colette Ungvary, (high jump, 8th, 4’10” and 55m hurdles, 8th, 9.98), Alessa Johnson (triple jump, 6th, 30-3), and Eva Mihova, (pole vault, 3rd, 7-0).
