March 6, 2024: The indoor track and field teams capped off their season by sending eight team members to the New York State Championships. The event was held on March 2nd at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Center on Staten Island.
Junior Wyatt Gravier had great success in the 55 meter hurdles this winter winning the Westchester County Championship, the Section 1 Championship, and the State Qualifier. In his first appearance at the State Championships competing against schools of all sizes, he placed 10th in a time of 7.88. Gravier was also the Class C Section 1 Champion in the high jump this winter.
Junior Maddy Williams also had an outstanding winter season placing first in the 1500m at the Section 1 State Qualifier (4:47.53). In her third trip to the Indoor State Championships, Williams placed 21st in the 1500m in a time of 4:48.23. During the 2023/2024 indoor track season, Williams was the Section 1 Champ in the 1000m and placed 3rd in the 1500m.
The State Championship also features a DMR relay made up of the best runners from each section who did not qualify at the State Qualifiers. Sophomore Kara Kochansky, who placed 4th in the 600m at the State Qualifiers, teamed up with three other Section 1 runners in the DMR and ran the 600m leg. The Section 1 relay team placed third among public schools and fourth in the Federation.
The Section placed 3rd at States with Kara Kochansky (back row, 7th from the left) running the 600m. 1 girls’ DMR
Kieran McBride, who placed 4th in the 1600m at the State Qualifiers, also competed in the intersectional DMR relay at states. Kieran anchored his relay running the 1600m leg and helped Section 1 to a second-place finish overall and second among public schools. McBride, a junior, had an outstanding indoor season finishing as both the 1600m Sectional 1 Class C Champion and the Westchester County Champion.
The girls 4x400m relay team, Juliet Winiecki, Eva Mihova, Ella McCalla, and Kara Kochansky, competed at the State Championship but unfortunately had a false start and did not record a time.
“It was a tough way for them to finish, but we know it will motivate them to run even faster this weekend at Nationals,” said Coach Brian Halling.
Twelve Broncos will move on to compete at Nationals this week. The boys will head to the New Balance Nationals in Boston tomorrow and Friday, along with Beatrice Hogue, who will compete as a middle-schooler. The girls’ 4x200m and 4x400m relay teams will compete at Nike Nationals at The Armory on March 8th and 10th.
