Bronxville High School Golfers Swing Their Way to Success

Apr. 30, 2014: Last Thursday, the Bronxville golfers were warming up on the putting green at Siwanoy Country Club before their match got underway. With everything in bloom, it was finally a perfect day for golf. The start of the season had been unusually cold, and sometimes snowy, but finally the golfers were treated to a warm, sunny afternoon. The Broncos took advantage of the great conditions and defeated Mamaroneck 210-236.
The players have not let the weather put a damper on their season. The team is 8-1 so far, and in their last two matches against Mamaroneck and Pelham, the Broncos took the top five spots.
"Our team leaders for this year are junior Martin Jensen and sophomores Connor Daly and Chris Gay," said Coach Chris Lockwood. "I am hopeful that they will remain on pace to qualify for the sectional tournament this year. Matt Bettino, a sophomore, has also been a nice addition to the team this year with consistent rounds of golf."
The team's league competition includes Scarsdale, Mamaroneck, Edgemont, White Plains, Pelham, New Rochelle, and Eastchester, but the Scarsdale team will be the toughest to beat. The Broncos' only loss came to Scarsdale last week, but they will meet up with the team again before the end of the season. Scarsdale is a team deep in talent and will be the Broncos' biggest challenge.
"I'm hoping to be competitive with Scarsdale this year," commented Coach Lockwood. "Of all the teams in the league, we have the best chance of beating them, but they are very good this year."
The golf team has a grueling schedule consisting of 16 matches, and it can play up to four matches in a week. In the next six days, the team will face Edgemont, Eastchester, and White Plains.
Go Broncos.
