John Flannery, Fiona Roediger, and Bronco Relays Finish on Top at Westchester County Track and Field Championships

May 21, 2014: At the Westchester County Championships held at Byram Hills High School on Sunday, the Bronxville girls finished third behind New Rochelle and Scarsdale, and the boys finished seventh. Senior John Flannery broke a 31-year-old meet record in the 800m with a time of 1:53.42, winning the county championship.
"I was pretty excited about that," said Flannery. "Going into the meet I had no idea what the record was, but at the meet the Byram Hills coach handed out a record packet. I just glanced at it before my race and thought I had a pretty good shot at it."
The Westchester County Championships are usually held on the Saturday after the night of the Bronxville junior and senior prom. This year, however, the teams got lucky and the meet was pushed to Sunday.
"Running the day after prom is a tough challenge," commented Flannery. "Usually the meet is on Saturday, but Byram Hills had a sectional lacrosse game, so it was changed to Sunday. It really worked out for us."
Senior Fiona Roediger also won a county title for the Broncos. She competed in the pentathlon, which consists of 100m high hurdles, 800m run, high jump, shot put, and long jump. Roediger first participated in the pentathlon as a freshman, finishing toward the bottom of the pack. She has improved by leaps and bounds over the past four years and won with 2300 points, her best performance of the season.
The Bronxville relay teams had stellar performances at counties. The boys' 4x800m relay team (Guy McKhann, Owen Hayes, Sean Ryan, J. Flannery) won the county title with a time of 8:08.45, topping its previous best time of 8:17.
"It was a great day at counties," said Coach Nick Roosa. "The boys' team is continuing to get better every week. The jump that the 4x800m made was fantastic. They are in a good position going into sectionals this week."
The girls' relay teams also ran well, earning first-place finishes in the 4x400m relay (Courtney Campbell, Hilary Rizzo, Lise Hudson, Kaitlin Ryan) and the 4x800m relay (Caroline Kirby, Olivia Scotti, Nicola Phillips, Laura Holland). The 4x100m relay team (Margot Richards, Caroline DePaul, Jamie Carroll, Sophie Kohlhoff) finished third with a time of 50.91 and is currently ranked first in Class C in New York State.
The Class C Sectional Championship will take place today at Valhalla High School.
