Pet of the Week: Esmé

By Allison Roesser
Sep. 18, 2019: Hello, my name is Esmé, and I'm the sweetest girl you'll ever meet. Part schnauzer, part terrier, and 100% love bug. I hail from Texas where I was found last spring as a stray and made my way to the East Coast this summer to try out life as a Manhattanite.
Frankly, I'm not a fan. I adore my human, but our apartment is too small for a proper game of catch (a favorite activity of mine) and I get sad and anxious when my human tries to step out without me, even a short period of time. I'm not destructive, but my inclination to protest with volume (aka barking/whining) when I'm left alone doesn't fly in such close-quartered, urban living. I've started to go to daycare, which is fun because I'm never on my own.
My human and I have spent the last few weeks in New Jersey, staying in a single unit-home. It's been wonderful. I've been on long walks by the beach, and have made lots of progress on my clicker commands. I never thought that I'd go into the crate by myself but now it is one of my favorite places to hang out.
Unfortunately, my Jersey residency is coming to an end because my human has to return to her real life in NYC. She has come around to the fact that I'm not my happiest self in the city with all those loud noises and our cranky neighbors and that I'm better suited to a life in a single-unit home with a family and ideally another dog to be my constant BFF.
This makes my human so sad because she loves me so much. But she also wants to do what's best for me. I am such a good girl and have so much love to give.
A little bit more about me ... I’m three years old, 46 pounds, healthy, spayed, and up to date with my vaccinations. I am micro-chipped, clicker trained, very smart, and getting much better with leash walking. I don’t have a mean bone in my body and am friendly to everyone I meet. Also, my mom grew up in Bronxville and I hear it’s a great place to live.
