Sep. 25, 2019:  As some of you know, I work at one of our local veterinary clinics.  Last week, the Mount Vernon animal shelter brought in eight cats to be vetted. One by one, we went through each kitty and gave them each a thorough exam and the necessary blood tests to make sure they were healthy enough to be adopted.  

As the last cat was placed on the examination table, I couldn’t help but notice her beautiful markings and calm demeanor. This sweet and docile girl had on a sparkling pink rhinestone collar with a tiny little bell hanging off of it that jingled as she moved her head.  

Throughout the exam, she kept looking up at me with the most expressive eyes and purring at us as if she hadn’t been this content in ages. It didn’t matter what we were doing to her, she was just happy to be the recipient of some human contact. I see a lot of cats with the work we do, but I cannot remember ever coming across one so gentle and kind.   

As we were about to return her to her crate, we noticed that she already had a scar from being spayed. This little angel had once clearly been someone’s beloved pet. 

Later in the day when the shelter employee came to pick her up, I asked what information he had on her. I was told her name was Annabelle and that she had been found walking down the sidewalk in Mount Vernon. Apparently, she wandered up to person after person trying to get their attention. Thankfully, she was picked up, brought to the shelter, and placed in the communal cat room.  e said it was also important to note that anytime someone walked into the room, she was always the first one to stand up and greet the person. She was clearly desperate for love and affection.  

I have not been able to stop thinking about Annabelle. It has now been over three weeks since she was rescued, yet she remains joyful, engaging, and most definitely one of the sweetest cats I have ever met.   

Annabelle does not belong in an animal shelter. She should be spending her days sharing her love with a family who will show her that the world is still a good place. It is believed that she is about five years old. She is in excellent health and ready for a new start to life.
