Plastic Film Wrap & Bags Collection Bin Available at ACME!

By the Bronxville Green Committee

Jan. 20, 2022: Plastic film is the soft, flexible polyethylene packaging used for most types of everyday bags, such as grocery, bread, zip-top and dry-cleaning bags, as well as shipping envelopes and air pillows. It’s also used as the wrap around many products such as water bottles, paper towels, and more.

Plastic film is everywhere and good news, it’s RECYCLABLE!

There are many benefits to properly recycling plastic film wrap and bags:

-Diverts plastic from the waste stream and removes it from landfills and waterways – effectively addressing one of the most pressing environmental challenges today

-Reduces contamination and complications at recycling facilities that do not recycle it

-Ships it to facilities that effectively recycle it into new materials

Although recyclable, these plastics should NOT be placed in curbside pickup. The wraps and bags have to be clean and dry to be recycled and collecting them in curbside bins with bottles and containers generally leaves them too dirty and wet to be recycled. Additionally, they can complicate the sorting process at recycling facilities that are not designed to recycle them.

Instead, these plastics must be taken to a drop-off location, like a grocery or other large retail store, to be collected for recycling. The Bronxville Green Committee recently worked with the Acme store in town to set up a collection bin outside its exit. It’s now easy and convenient for residents to collect their film plastic and drop it off when in town.

See the many items that are accepted below. A general rule is that if you can’t tear it, you can include it and when in doubt, throw it out. You can get started today by setting up a separate collection bin next to your other kitchen recycling bins – you’ll be shocked to see how much is collected in one week!
