By the family

March 13, 2025: It is with great sorrow that the family of Joseph E. Godfrey III announces his death. Joseph died at Calvary Hospice on March 11, 2025.

Joseph was born in Rhode Island on September 8, 1945 to Susan (Malsch) and Joseph Edwin "Ed" Godfrey, Jr.  After being discharged from the Navy at the end of WWII, Ed started a long career at General Electric which took the family to Schenectady, NY, Summit, NJ, and West Hartford, CT.  Joseph graduated from Conard High School in West Hartford in 1963.  He went on to Northwestern University, class of '67, where he was a member of Sigma Chi.  He received an MBA from Columbia Business School in 1969.  Joseph was a loyal and enthusiastic alumnus of both universities.  He received an Alumni Association Medal for Distinguished Service from Columbia University.

After graduating from Columbia, Joseph had a career in the life insurance, employee benefits, and executive compensation fields.  He never officially retired and was still doing business almost until the end.

Joseph was a member of The Reformed Church of Bronxville for over 39 years.  He served as an usher and in more recent years as a member of the Chancel Choir.  He greatly enjoyed singing in the choir and volunteering with the Coming Home program.  He volunteered with Heartsong for over a decade.  He was a long time member of the Bronxville Field Club and participated in racquet sports and swimming.  He also loved the social events.

Joseph is survived by his wife of 41 years, Carol, his son, Joseph E. "Chip" Godfrey IV, (Amanda Brody), his daughter, Kristin Godfrey Kearney, (Brian), and two granddaughters, Layla and Penelope Kearney.  He is also survived by his brother, Chester, (Susan), and two nephews.  His brother, Andrew, pre-deceased him.

A memorial service will be held at The Reformed Church of Bronxville on March 28 at 11:00am.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to one of his universities, The Parkinson's Foundation, or The Reformed Church of Bronxville.
