August 3, 2011: Mr. Alfred J. Kelty of Bronxville passed away on July 27, 2011, at the age of 75.
As throughout his life, his last moments were shared with his loving wife of 52 years, Anne. Al was a good man with a big heart and a great sense of humor who prized his family and friends above all else. He was liked by those who met him, respected by all who knew him, and loved by those who knew him well, and he will be sorely missed.
Al was born in the Bronx, the only child of Alfred and Elizabeth Kelty. The son of two teachers, Al attended Fordham Prep and graduated from Fordham University in 1957 with a bachelor of arts degree. He completed his formal education in 1972, earning his masters in business administration from Iona College.
Following his graduation from Fordham University in 1957, Al was accepted into the training program of the Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida. After four months of training, Al was commissioned in 1958 as an ensign in the U.S. Navy, receiving a promotion to lieutenant JG and the gold wings of a naval aviator in 1959.
After AOCS and before his first assignment, Al returned to New York and married the love of his life, Anne Carolan, on January 3, 1959. From there, Al and Anne began a five-year stint in the U.S. Navy, with Al piloting an S-2 Tracker specializing in anti-submarine warfare. His naval career was highlighted by tours of duty aboard several aircraft carriers, including the USS Hornet and the USS Intrepid, the latter of which was the ship that ferried Scott Carpenter back to Cape Canaveral after the astronaut landed his Aurora 7 spacecraft in the Atlantic following his 1962 space flight.
In 1963, Al and his growing family left military life, and he began working with IBM in New York. Al's career moved shortly thereafter to New York Telephone, where he remained through that company's rebirth as AT&T and ultimately Verizon, rising to the level of regional manager before his retirement in 1992. Prior to retirement, Al decided to pursue his interest in finance and received his certification as a certified financial planner, which enabled him to provide financial planning for friends and family.
Al is survived by Anne C. Kelty, his wife, and their five children, Susan Kelty Law of Bronxville; Carol Moses of Rye; Eileen O'Neill of Briarcliff Manor; John Kelty of Bronxville; and Meg Lawler of Crestwood. Al is also survived by 14 grandchildren who, together with his wife and children, were the love of his life and a constant source of joy and pride.
A funeral Mass was held on Saturday, July 30, at St. Joseph's Church in Bronxville.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that contributions be made to The Calvary Fund, Calvary Hospital, 1740 Eastchester Road, Bronx, NY 10461.
