Jul. 16, 2014: Sandor Balint, a longtime resident of Bronxville, passed away on July 13, 2014, at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Balint, and his cousins, Nancy Teseny Fallon and Richard Teseny. Along with his parents, Theodore and Aranka Arnoldussen, he was predeceased by his twin sister, Jeanette Arnoldussen.
He was born in Bridgeport, CT, and moved with his family to New York City a month later, where he grew up in the South Bronx and East Harlem. He started violin lessons at the age of seven and subsequently entered Music and Art High School.
In his third year at Music and Art, at the age of seventeen, he auditioned for and won a position with Leonard Bernstein, who was forming the New York City Symphony. With Bernstein's recommendation, he auditioned for the New York City Opera and Ballet, where he stayed until joining the Met in 1956.
In addition, in 1950 he auditioned for Leopold Stokowski and was made a permanent member of the RCA Victor Recording Orchestra.
Sandor Balint made his recital debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1956 and concertized until he was invited to audition for the Met Opera Orchestra in December of 1956. He was first elected to the orchestra committee in 1959 and served in contract signings in 1961, '66, and '69.
He was elected as chairman for contract negotiations from 1977 through 2000. Until his death, he was still an active member of the Met's first violin section.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Westchester Funeral Home, Inc., 190 Main Street in Eastchester (914-337-4585).
A funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at a time to be announced. Burial to follow.
