Written by Elizabeth B. Hewitt

Dec. 10, 2014: Alfred S. Hewitt of Bronxville (fondly called Fred) died peacefully in his sleep on November 29, 2014. He was born in North Carolina on October 19, 1940, and was the son of Hortense Seaver Hewitt and Albert Cullen Hewitt Jr. of Marion, North Carolina.

Fred grew up in Marion, graduated from Marion High School, and earned a BA and an MBA from the University of Georgia. His professional life was in the field of textiles, where he worked for over 30 years as an executive with Milliken & Company and later with Squires High Tech and Viscotec USA.

In earlier years, Fred was an avid tennis player and golfer. His passion was reading, with a special interest in history, which he loved discussing with his friends. He thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie and weekly bridge games with a wonderful group of friends who refer to themselves as the Geezers.

In 1966, Fred married Elizabeth Howell Bird of Atlanta, Georgia, in Highlands, North Carolina, and they had 48 wonderful years together. He loved and enjoyed his family.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; three daughters, Elizabeth Adair H. Wingfield and husband David and their two children, Annabelle Katharine and James Thomas, all of Tampa, Florida, Katharine H. Bailey (Tattie) and husband Dave and their two sons, Gregory Alfred and Reid Arthur of Belvedere and Truckee California, and Tyler D. Hewitt of Boulder, Colorado.

He is also survived by his sister, Eloise H Thornton of Queen Creek, Arizona; his brothers-in-law, Francis M. Bird Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia, and George A. H. Bird Sr. and his wife, Cornelia M. Bird, of Atlanta, Georgia; seven nephews and four nieces; and seventeen great-nephews and-great nieces. He was predeceased by his step-brother, Fred H. Blanton, and his wife, Landra M. Blanton, of Panama City Beach, Florida.

Fred was a member of The Reformed Church of Bronxville, where he served on the ushering team for over 35 years. A private family interment is planned.

Donations in Fred's memory may be made to The Reformed Church of Bronxville, Music Enhancement Fund, P.O. Box 397, Bronxville, NY 10708 or to a charity of choice.
