Jan. 14, 2015: William "Bill" John Green passed away at the age of 89 on December 15, 2014. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan Shea Green, and their four children, Bill Green of St. Petersburg, Florida, Betsy (Vincent Reilly) of Darien, Connecticut, Kathy (Michael O'Connor) of Livingston, New Jersey, and Kerry David of Greenwich, Connecticut. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Matthew Reilly, Katie O'Connor, Meghan Reilly, Erin David, and Kelly O'Connor.
Bill was born on February 22, 1925, in Greenwich, Connecticut, to John and Mary Green and had one sister, Jean Green O'Shea. Bill was raised in Port Chester, New York, and graduated from Port Chester High School, where he was a varsity athlete in both basketball and baseball.
At the age of 17, Bill enlisted in the US Navy during World War II and became an aviation radio man second class and an aerial gunner. He was decorated with the Air Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Presidential Unit Citation.
After the war, Bill went on to receive undergraduate and master's degrees from New York University and an additional master's degree from City College in New York.
Bill married Joan Marie Shea on November 25, 1954, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Greenwich, Connecticut. They initially resided in Port Chester and later moved to Bedford, New York, to raise their family.
Bill worked as the athletic director for Bronxville High School. During his tenure he coached many sports, including varsity basketball, golf, and track, and he was an assistant football coach. He was named league coach of the year twice for basketball. Of the many sports that he coached, his real love was basketball, and upon his retirement in 1985, the Bill Green Basketball Tournament was established.
In addition to his work at Bronxville, Bill and his family spent the summers of 1964 to 1972 at Camp Dudley in Westport, New York, where he served as the athletic director.
Bill and Joan split their time in retirement between Vero Beach, Florida, and Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, where he enjoyed golf, bridge, and reading.
His biggest and brightest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by us all. To leave an online condolence, please visit www.leopgallaghergreenwich.com.
