Jan. 14, 2015: The world has lost a little of its sparkle with the passing of Mary Gagen, who died last Sunday, January 4, 2015, in Greenwich, Connecticut, at the age of 90.
Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, to Michael and Mary Elizabeth Mahoney, Mary graduated from Manhattanville College in 1946 earning a degree in psychology. She received a master's degree in education, from Manhattanville, in 1974. A longtime resident of Bronxville, New York, Mary was for a short while a teacher at the Chatfield School. And many will remember her in her role as director of volunteers at Lawrence Hospital, where she worked for almost twenty years. She retired and moved to Greenwich, Connecticut, in 1996.
Mary will be greatly missed by all who loved her razor-sharp intellect, wit and humor, kindness and vitality. She was a known presence at Tod's Point and Bruce Park in Greenwich where she was an avid walker.
Mary was the devoted mother to daughter Melissa of New York City and son Carter of Cincinnati, Ohio. She is also survived by her brothers Paul and Michael Mahoney, her cousin Donald Procter, who was like another brother to her, Carter's wife, Kelli, and their sons, Grady, Sullivan, and Quinn.
The family will host a memorial mass on January 17 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Parish, 469 North Street, Greenwich, Connecticut. A celebration will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory can be made to The Ken Anderson Foundation (to benefit autism in Cincinnati area) (2230 Sweetbriar Lane, Cincinnati, OH 45239; www.kenandersonfoundation.com) or B Kind Foundation (P.O. Box 012, New Canaan, CT 06840; www.Bkind.today).
