By the Family

May 20, 2015:  Called "By" by everyone, he died peacefully on April 29, 2015. 

Born in Topeka, Kansas, he was a happy child who grew up to be crowned "the King" of his senior year by his classmates at Topeka HS. This was an early example of the impression he made on everyone who knew him. 

After graduating from Stanford University, class of ’41, By answered the call of his nation by joining the US Navy. The Navy sent him to officers training school at Cornell University. Upon graduation, he was a commissioned officer deployed to the South Pacific. He was responsible for coordinating and directing air flights for the Naval Transport Service. For his excellent service, he rose to the rank of lieutenant commander. 

After the war, and returning to civilian life, he went into business with his wartime best friend, Ed Coale, selling war surplus heavy machinery. Ed Coale, as many on Boca Grande know, remained a lifelong pal. Ed and Holly Coale introduced Jane and By to this beautiful island off the west coast of Florida. They fell in love with the island and were actively involved in the community for 25 years. 

Following the surplus business, By studied communications at NYU, which led to a career as an announcer, narrator, and spokesman on radio and television. He was an on-camera spokesman for Eastman Kodak, Olin Matheson Chemical, U.S. Steel, Buick, and Crocker Anglo Bank, among others. He was also the "voice over" announcer for Edward R. Murrow. 

After many successful years, By retired from on-camera work and pursued his second career in the field of executive recruiting. He joined Handy Associates, a Manhattan-based search firm, where he recruited executive talent for many of America's top corporations. 

In 1948, By met and married Jane Cartwright, a Ford Agency fashion model and landscape painter. After five years in Manhattan, they moved to Bronxville. There, they lived for 38 years, raising three boys with space to roam. By was very involved in the community and was a deacon in The Reformed Church of Bronxville. The family also enjoyed wonderful summers together at a cottage on Candlewood Lake in Connecticut. As the years passed, they relived those glorious years with frequent family reunions. 

By was an avid sportsman throughout his life and played golf and tennis almost daily well into his nineties. His snow skiing was voluntarily cut short at the age of 88. 

By's three sons, Gary, Doug, and Wes, have an enormous love for their dad as does Jane, his wife of 66 years. By touched the lives of many who knew him socially as a member of the Lemon Bay Golf Club, The Boca Bay Pass Club, The Quaker Hill Country Club in Pawling, NY, and the Candlewood Isle Club in New Fairfield, CT. 

The passing of By will leave a void in the hearts and lives of his wife, sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren, Ian, Caren, Casey, and Hailey. The same can be said of every friend who has had the privilege of knowing and sporting with "the King," one of God's truly good men.
