Apr. 6, 2016: Claribel "Clare" D. McBane, 63, of Lee Hook Road, Lee, New Hampshire, died March 20, 2016, at Hyder Hospice House, Dover, New Hampshire.
Born on November 5, 1952, in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of James N. and Day (Bonynge) McBane. She was raised in Bronxville, where she graduated from high school in 1970. She moved to Durham in 1974 to attend the University of New Hampshire, where she received her MS and PhD in zoology.
Clare married Kenneth C. Baldwin in 1982 and is also survived by her two children, Hannah D. Baldwin and Samuel J. Baldwin, both of Lee; her son-in-law, Robert W. Dillon; and her grandson, Oliver McBane Dillon.
She was a talented artist and her work focused primarily on pen and ink and sculpture. She loved interacting with nature, whether it was hiking in the White Mountains or tide-pooling along the New Hampshire seacoast, and she instilled this appreciation and sense of exploration in her children. She spent many summers at the family home in Lake George, NY, fishing, boating, and spending time with her family.
She had a lifelong love of and passion for animals. Throughout her life, her home was filled with creatures big and small. Her faithful canine companion, Kiwi, was a source of comfort until the end.
Clare was an intelligent, generous, strong, and compassionate wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, and she will be greatly missed.
A memorial visitation was held at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home on Friday, April 1.
