Pet of the Week: Sierra

Dec. 11, 2013:  Check out those glorious whiskers!! There is no mistaking this beauty for any old average pussycat.

Lovely Sierra may look like a mature lady, but this delightful and captivating gal is actually only one year old. This long-haired tuxedo has a nice touch of Maine coon mixed in, which may help explain her relaxed attitude.

Maine coon cats are often known for their loving, clown-like nature and amusing habits. This is a breed that develops slowly and reaches maturity around age three or four. Aging, however, does not eliminate their playful, kitten-like temperament and reputation as "gentle giants" of the feline world.

Maine coons are known for being helpful to their human families by jumping into the center of activities; they love to chase objects and can be taught to play catch and fetch. This breed is known for not being overly dependent on their human family. Instead of pestering you for attention, they will remain close by for companionship. Not usually "lap cats," they prefer to sit beside you instead of on top of you.

Maine coon cats make great buddies for kids and generally socialize well with other pets. Another interesting fact is that unlike many cat breeds, they prefer to remain low to the ground rather than jumping up to higher surfaces.

Shrouded in mystery, the origin of Maine coon cats has been the source of legends. Many breeders today hold that Maine coon cats are the product of mating between preexisting shorthaired domestic cats and longhairs introduced from overseas by seamen or brought to America by the Vikings.

True to her breed's nature, Sierra is friendly, charming, playful, and adventurous. This active and curious girl gets along well with other cats and would do very well in a family setting.

Sierra is in excellent health, has been spayed, and is up to date with her vaccinations. The adoption donation for Sierra is $75.
